THE CHARLESTON HOTEL.-A
change -which has been for a long
time contemplated in the proprietor?
ship of this , old and popular hotel,
was finally consummated yesterday,
and Mr. J. P. Horbach, who has so
?well acted the part of superintendent
since the death of Mr. White, is now
the managing proprietor. Tho
Charleston Hotel is an old institution
of this city, and indeed of this State,
for who of the many visitors from the
interior does not regard its massive
pile, stately colonnade, handsome
drawing-rooms, abundant table and
luxurious chambers as forming at
least one-half of the city of Charles?
ton? Mr, C. A. Miller, so well and
favorably known to the traveling
public, continues to preside over its
finances.-Charleston Mercury.
The English are groaning over an
increase of a penny in the pound in
the income tax, caused by the Abys?
sinian war. This makes the aggre?
gate five pence in the pound, equi?
valent to a Little over two per cent,
income tax; ours in five. The tax in
England is imposed on the average
income for three years, and all in?
comes on ?100 or $500 are exempt.
With ns the exemption applies to all
under Si,OOO. But our income tax is
more than twice as heavy as the
English, to say nothing of the taxes
on manufactures and various articles
of common consumption, in whioh
they are more than four times as
high._
S$900,000 has lately been paid for
e iron works at Phillipsburg, New
Jersey. From this mine was taken
the first American bar iron ever car?
ried to Europe-more than 120 years
ago._
