THE PROSPECT OP BUSINESS.-The
present dullness of business leads
many people to paint a fearfully dnrk
picture of the future. In tho hard
times that we now have, they see
only the beginning of trouble, and
feel only the premonitory shook of a
general crash. The situation is bad
enough in fact, without the aid of
fancy. Trade is very dull; manufac?
tures aro comparatively stagnant, and
a large number of working men are
out Of employment. But it is folly
to assert that we are on the eve of a
great finanoial disaster, and that
everything in the way of business is
abont to be shaken to pieces by an
industrial earthquake. The truth is,
that we have already passed the
worst point. Prices have fallen in
most cases to their legitimate level.
Economy has taken the place of ex?
travagance, and the value of money
begins to be appreciated. This state
of things is only a natural re-action
from the abnormal prosperity and
reckless expenditure which prevailed
while the rebellion was in progress.
Trade is settling down into the old
channels. Business men are awaking
to tlie fact that the time has passed
for making fortunes in a twelvemonth
by the appreciation of goods. They
are learning that reasonable profits
and judicious, careful and economi?
cal management are reqnired now.
In .short, the present dullness is
merely equalizing the unnatural
prosperity that lately existed. Fur?
ther than that it will not go. There
is no element of general disaster in
the present situation, and the predic?
tions of suoh evils are entirely with?
out foundation. The finances of the
country are sound, agriculture is in a
thriviug condition, and everything
combines to make industry profitable.
There is every reason to believe that
business will be good in the spring
not as it was in 1804^5, but sound,
healthful and stable.

Fremont, Chief Engineer and Su?
perintendent of the Wilmington and
Weldon Railroad Company, has
issued proposals for a large number
of hands to work on his road during
the ensuing year. Good wages and
i equitable terms are offered. Fair
notice is given to the freedmen, that
I if colored hands are not secured by
January 1, imported white laborers
will bo engaged. This offer is first
mode for the benefit of the honest
and industrious colored men along
the line of the road. Hero is an op?
portunity offered to all freedmen dis?
posed to work, to engage remunera?
tive labor for the coming year. If
they fail to take advantage of this
and similar offers, what moro can

will declare, at tho next session of
his court in this city, that the so

appeal to the Supremo Court of tho
