THE ASHLEY , R IVER PHOSPHATES. -
The first exportation of the valuable
deposits of phosphates from their
location on Ashley River, near this
city, took place on Saturday last, by I
the steamship Falcon, for Baltimore,
which vessel carried among her cargo
a shipment of sixteen tierces of this
manure. It is our hope that this is
but the commencement of a large
and important trade, which will as?
sist to an important extent in lifting
tho fortunes of some of our citizens !
from their present depressed condi?
tion. Wo hope, however, that those
interested in these deposits may
avoid, eo far as may bo, the policy
hitherto almost unqualifiedly- pur?
sued by our people, of sending off
every production of the country in a
raw state, when, by a li ttl o enter?
prise; it might be placed in a form
which add largely to its value and to
the wealth of the State. It can hard?
ly be disputed, we think, that we
will never bo wealthy and great on
simple agriculture and the exporta?
tion of raw products. The Falcon
carried ont rico for Cincinnati and
St. Louis, cottons for Baltimore and
Philadelphia, and although steamers
are going through "dull times" at
present, this line appears to be doing

NARROW ESCAPE.-The down pns
setfger train from Columbia, last;
Friday? had a very narrow and fortu?
nate escape, by the timely discovery
of a broken rail, from what might
have been a serious accident, attend
. ed with loss of life. The discovery
was made by Mr. George Bryant,
while walking from Oraugeburg to
Rowe's Pump. On seeing the de?
fective rail, Mr. Bryant remained at
the spot, until the arrival of the train
from Columbia, and stopped it in
time to prevent any accident The
*AS3ongers, deeming this aotion as
porthy of something more than an
expression of thanks, by tho efforts
of Mr. A. D. Harper, of New York,
made up a handsome sum of money,
which was presented to Mr. Bryant
as a more substantial testimonial of
their appreciation of his noble act.

with myself-one of them used it on cotton
and corn, and thinks it answered finely;
the other put it on cotton, on very poor
ground, and thinks it doubled his crop. I
used it on corn. It anawered finely, and
waa thought by the hand that titivated
the crop to be fully equal to Rhode's Super
Phosphate. I also used it on abont an
acre of cotton, and I am clearly of opinion
that it ia tho nest and cheapest fertilizer
in use, and I expect to order eoveral tona

Several kinds of manures were used by
ns, with tho exception of your Foudrctte,
with little or no effect to the crop.
Where the Poudrette was used, it gave
us near half a halo moro per acre, and
caused the cotton to open much earlier;
and wo would, therofore, recommend tho
samo ns a concentrated manure for the
growth of cotton, as well as improvement
