SIGNS IN THE HEAVENS ABOVE, IN
THE EARTH BENEATH, AND IN THE
WATERS UNDER THE EARTH.-Recent?
ly the earth passed through a torrent,
or what seemed a torrent, of fiery
matter. Simultaneously with the
appearance of this deluge of fire the
flood-gates of tho great deep were
opened up, and a local flood was ex?
perienced in many parts, particularly
in the West Indies. At the same time
strange grumbling noises were heard
in the earth beneath, earthquakes
abounded, volcanic eruptions became
general, and tho smouldering fires of
Vesuvius burst forth anew with
tremendous fury. Whether the earth
is still on the trail of tho late fiery
visitor, and to a certain extent under
its influence, or whether there was
any connection between the signs in
the heavens above, the signs in the
waters under tho earth, we yet await
some- learned Loomis to inform us
It is at least undeniable that the earth
and its inhabitants oro yet under some
strange and rather extraordinary in?
fluences. Politically, socially, mate
rielly, wo are evidently, whatever the
cause or causes, passing through a
peculiar crisis. In the old world and
.in the new, men's minds aro filled
with strange thoughts, and what is to
be the character of the immediate
futuro is a problem to all. Vesuvius,
according to our latest news, was still
in flames. In the West Indies, i
special telegram informs us, earth
Sunken are abundant, and the watery
eluge has not yet subsided. There
are many inferences which might bo
legitimately drawn from this state of
things. Wo content ourselves with
one. Mr. Seward is busy with his
real estate investments in tho West
Indies. Might it not bo well for him
to hesitate before ho concludes his
purchases ? Peal estate in that part
of the world may be very valuable ;
but tho American people, willing as
they are to havo their money spent
for them in making the islands of the
sea their own, would prefer that the
islands purchased should havo their
heads above water. St. Thomas sub?
merged might prove a very good
fishing ground, but it would not be
of much u'.e as an out-post, or ns a
coaling station.-New York Herald.
One of Weston's old shoes, with
proper attestation of its genuineness,
was received by mail at Portland,
Maine, with tho following inscription
on the tag attached to tho package:
"One of Weston's shoes, procured at
enormous expense, by the citizens of
Cleveland, Ohio, and presented by
them to tho citizens of Portland,
Maine, as a monument to the enter?
prise of one of its citizens."

corn and cotton, and am satistied wherever
it waa applied the yield was more than
doublo what it would have been without it.
I regret exceedingly my not using it inoro

tho crop to be fully equal to Rhode's Supei
Phosphate. I also used it on about an
acre of cotton, and I am clearly of opinion
that it is tho beat and cheapest fcrtilizci
in use, and I expect to order several tout
