Freedmen's Affairs was directed to
inquire and report the reasons, if
any, for continuing the Freedmen's
Bureau. Deteotive Baker, arrested
by order of the Judiciary Committee,
has been discharged, on payment of
costa. The memorial from Alabama,
regarding the cotton tax, was referred
to the Committee of Ways and
Means. The same Committee waa
directed to inquire as to the expe?
diency of taxier United States bonds

went into committee of the whole

- AUGUSTA, November 26.-Trains on
the Macon and Augusta Boad com?
menced running to Milledgeville to?
day. This route shows a gain of
forty-four miles between Augusta and
Macon, as compared with the Central
via Millen.
The Conservative Convention at
Macon promises to be fairly attended.
The press are urging on the people
the necessity of a thorough organiza?
tion, for the purpose of defeating the
Constitution to be submitted by thc
Reconstruction Convention. Meet?
ings have been held in various parts
of the State and delegates appointed.
It is believed the Convention will
issue an address, urging the people
not to take part in the election for
the ratification of the reconstruction
Constitution; hoping by this means
to defeat it.
SAVANNAH, November 26.-A boiler
at Lamar's cotton press exploded this
morning, killing two negroes and
seriously wounding the white en?
gineer. The building was a com?
plete wreck. Damages estimated at
68,000.
BALTIMORE, November 26.-John
S. and George Wise, have been in
oted for assault with intent to kill
dward A Pollard.
A nitro-glycerine explosion at
Bergen, New Jersey, killed nine per?
sons and injured others.
Mrs. Howell, Mr. Davis' mother-in
law, died at Montreal to-day. The
deceased lady was a native of Geor?
gia, and about sixty-five years of age.
She married a son of Gen. Howell,
of New Jersey, of revolutionary
fame, by whom she had several chil?
dren; one of whom-Varienna
Howell-is the wife of Mr. Davis.
A man at Lindsay, Canada, was
fined five dollars the other day for
cursing the Queer/.
NEW ORLEANS, November 26.-The
Convention succeeded in organizing
to-day. Officers stand-President,
white; secretary, sergeant-at-arms and
door-keeper, colored. A committee,
with a white chairman, was appointed
to draft rules and regulations; pend?
ing which tho rules and regulations
of the House of Representatives of
the United States, wore adopted. No
other business transacted.
Tho Ouachitta River Packet Idaho,
blew up at the wharf to-day.. Six
mon wore wounded-two mortally.
The upper works of tho boat wrecked.
Gov. Isham Harris is nt home, in
Tennessee, under parole, to appear
in the Federal Court, in March.
Tlie Alabama Convention.
MONTGOMERY, November 26.-The
Reconstruction Convention adopted
tho following article of the constitu?
tion : Taxation-All taxes on proper?
ty in this State shall be assessed in
exact properties to the value of such
property; provided, however, that the
General Assembly may levy a poll
tax, not to oxceed $1.50 on eaoh poll,
which shall be applied exclusively in
aid of the public sohool fund. The
day's session was consumed in discus?
sing the proposition to vest power in
the Governor to appoint all judicial
officers. Tho Convention finally
provided for the election of Supreme
Court Judges and Chancellors by the
.egislatnre, and all other judicial
ulcers by the people.
Prospects of a Convention, ?cc.
CHARLESTON, November 26.--The|
impression is almost unanimous here,
that owing to tho lack of a requisite
majority of registered voters, the
Convention will be defeated in South
Carolina-62,000 votes being required
to insure the Convention, and only
25,000 known to have voted in 20
Districts, out of the 80 in the State.
Later accounts from Wadmalaw]
Island show that the statement of a
riot there was much exaggerated.
No person was seriously hurt.

RICHMOND, November 26.-In the
Davis case, Mr. Evarts, for the Go?
vernment, said the intention of the
Government was to try the Davis
case some day this term. One con?
sideration in fixing the day was the
time when Chase would attend here,
and the Government proposed to I
name a day after the adjournment of
the Supreme Conrt for this trial,
when Chase could sit with Under?
wood. Evarts suggested the fourth
Wednesday in March. Mr. O'Con?
nor said the personal convenience of
Mr. Davis wonld have been promot?
ed, if that had taken place in May
lost, and it would be very convenient
now; but his counsel would agree to
the proposition of Mr. Evarts. He
thought the presence of Chase would
be beneficial not alone to the inte?
rests of the accused, but to all inte
rests. Judge Underwood said the
arrangement proposed by the Go?
vernment was agreeable to the Court,
and particularly because the Court
earnestly desired that Judgo Chase
should sit upon the case; it was due
to the defendant that two judges
should sit in the case, in order that
an appeal might be taken on disputed
Suestions, and the case carried up by
efendant to a higher .conrt. The
Judge agreed to fix the 22d of March
for the trial, and on application of |
Mr. O'Connor, to extend Mr. Davis'
bail bond until that time; and far?
ther agreed, if Judge Chase could
not preside then, to extend the leave
of absence until the term following.
The order of extension of leave of
absence for Mr. Davis, and fixing the
22d March for the trial, was entered
by order of the Jndge, and the trial
ended for this term. Mr. Davis did
not appear in Court. Those wit?
nesses who came into Court-ex-Sec?
retary Seddon, ex-Governor Letcher
and General Wickham-were recog?
nized to appear at the next term.
These gentlemen and several other !
witnesses for the Government were
before the grand jury to-day-which
shows that Davis will be tried on a
new indictment at the term in March.
