COTTON.-There? is now a greater
probability of the ^removal of tho
cotton tax than at any previous time.
Commissioner "Wells hos recommend?
ed a large reduction of the tax, tho
whole Northern press speaks against
the tax in toto, and several radical
Congressmen aro willing to throw a
crumb of comfort to the Southern
white men for the sake of the political
negro. Steps have already been
taken in tho United States House of
Representatives looking to the ac?
complishment of this purpose; and
both producer and consumer aro
heartily on tho side of this kind of
Congressional reconstruction.
Tho cotton tux was originally in?
tended as much as a punishment as a
source of revenue; and now, that its
bad effects have been felt, Congress
is required to repeal the tax at once
and to apply the repealing Aot to the
present year, and return the tax,
.where already paid, to the producer.
A repeal of the cotton tax will en?
courage tho cultivation of cotton in
the South. It will, ii applied to the 1
present.crop, enable planters to pay
their factors in full, instead of re?
maining in debt; it will conyert loss
into profit; it will give planters some
reason to hopo that they can, with all |
the drawbacks of the day, raise cot?
ton, and make money by so doing.
There has not been lately much for
which the South can thank Congress,
but tho South will bo heartily glad if
the cotton tax is removed, whatever
the immediate reasons that may lend
to its removal.-Charleston News.

Phosphate. I also uaed it on about an
acre of cotton, and I am clearly of opinion
that it is tho beat and cheapest fertilizer
in use, and I expect to order several tons
