A YOUNG LADY ABDUCTED AND HER
RAVISHER SKINNED ALIVE.-A Mom
phis paper narrates the following
horrible incidents in Mississippi life :
Three or four days have elapsed

A young lady of tho highest respect?
ability and most amiable character,
-was proceeding to a neighbor's house,
where n party to which she had been
invited, was given, when she was
overtaken by a negro man and forci?
bly drawn from the high road into
the woods, her cries stifled with a
cloth of some sort pressed over her
mouth. Taken to a secluded and
desolate spot, 6ho was tied by tho
negro, and there detained for a week,
while the black scoundrel effected his
vile purpose, without tho miserable
victim being able to offer the slightest
resistance.
Two men, who were out hunting,
unexpectedly came upon her, still
tightly bound and alone. Her captor
had left her at the moment, either to
procure food or pursue some other
purpose. Learning from tho wretch?
ed girl the circumstances of the
atrocity practiced upon her, they
concealed themselves until he should
return. Nor had they loug to wait,
and, upon his coming, they at once
seized and secured him. Believing
that the victim should pronounce
sentence upon him, they awaited her
decree. It was to flay him alive.
They at once proceeded with their
hunting knives to relieve him of his
epidermis. Tho forest resounded
with his cries and imprecations, as
they stripped tho skin from tho soles
of his feet to his body. By the time
they had progressed to his middle,
nature could stand no more, but com
pletly exhausted yielded up tho ghost,
the monster dying a most horrible
death. Tho girl was conveyed to her
home, where everything was done to
relieve her suffering, but she died the
next day in great anguish.
NEW YORK CITY NATIONAL BANKS.
It appears from the abstract of quar?
terly reports of the Now York city
national banks, as made to tho Comp?
troller of thc Currency, October 7,
that the aggregato of circulation and
deposits is about 8190,000,000, for
which n reservo of 25 per cent.,
$17,000,000 in lawful money, is re?
quired by sections 31 and 32 of the
banking act.' The abstract shows a
reserve $62,000,000, or 8 per cent,
more than is required. The exchange
for the clearing-house is nearly $103,
000,000, and the amount of specie
about seven ?nd one-third millions.
The cotton crop of the present
year, the New York Journal of Com?
merce, after n carefnl review of all tho
evidence on the subject, estimates at
2,500,000 bales; tho New Orleans
Picayune estimates it at 2,000,000.
