wealthy planters of the South, for
tho landa in the Southern States are
now their only copi tal. The other
property of the richest planter has
been swept away; nevertheless, these
extensivo land-holders, especially in
v this State?, have made no effort what'
??er to convert their hundreds and
thousands of uncultivated acres into
living, active capital. They appear
to be looking tor a resuscitation of
tho old system of labor, or else they
?ra hopelessly wedded to tho idea
that they would be defrauding their
t -children and their heirs by parting
with any portion of thoir lands.
. But it is time this error was dis
' polled. The recuperation ...of the
South, the early development of her
resources-in short, her whole' future
prosperity-is noy? in the hands of
lier land-holders., Whatever .delay
may occur in her restoration to any?
thing like prosperity, will be from
tthe faot that they have not used any
?effort to encourage capital or labor to
?orno among them; The State has
appointed a Commissioner of Immi?
gration, and baa made as liberal an
- Appropriation as she was able, to
carry out the objeot of replacing our
former labor with industrious and
skilled laborers; but, in the State of
South Carolina, where is the planter
who has offered to theso new-comers
any inducement whatever? Not one
that we know of. Political causes
?nay have some effect as impeding
the measures of resuscitation we
refer to; but that they are not the
?only impediments, the State of Vir?
ginia proves. Already she has
brought to her fertile valleys indus?
trious Swiss, immigrants and North
em capitalists. The lands were ad?
vertised, agents were sent to the
North, and other agencies employed
to induce capital and labor, and the
jcesult is a complete success.
How long the planters [of South
. Carolina will hug their old preju?
dices, and thus deprive the State of
the aid they alone ?an give, we do
not know. All we can do, as publio
journalists, is to give line npon line
?nd precept npon preoept, until we
oast arouso the publio opinion of
'those who are most interested in the
prosperity of their section. There is
too much grumbling and complaint
about the situation, and too little
effort made to remedy it.
. MOKE ISLANDS CEDED.-A despatch
to the New York papers, from San
Francisco, states thut the King of the
.Feejco Islands has ceded to the
United State? three small islands in a
group, one of which possesses a fine
harbor, capablo of being converted
into a naval station. There have re?
cently been troubles in these islands
between the natives and American
residents, and the United States
steamship Tuscarora has been cruis?
ing in those regions to investigate the
troubles. Whether the cession of
three islands was intended os on
atonement for any wrong done to
Americans, or whether it was made in
consequence, of direct solicitation
from Washington, is not stated. The
King evan offered the protectorate^
all his dominions to thc United
States, but Capt. Stanley deoliued
accepting it, believing that he did not
possess sufficient authority. The
Feejee Islands are a group of islands
in the South Pacific Ocean, East of
the Now Hebrides. The entire group
comprises altogether 1C4 islands, oi
which sixty-five are inhabited. The
total population is estimated at 133,

female virtue-who will be able to
stay the hand of the assassin, or
where .will there bs any protection
for Ufe "or property, in any commu?
nity, where God and religion are
openly derided, and the Scriptures
the Word of God-with their holy
teachings, are reviled and trampled
on? The strong arm of the law will
be paralyzed and rendered utterly
powerless, while the wild passions of
depraved human nature will be the
sole arbiters ol right and justice.
May God save the country from the
doom which will inevitably be hers,
should such teachings as those re?
ferred to prevail to any extent

THR WOOIJ MABKET.-The follow?
ing is an extract from a letter of a
Southern man to his Northern friend :
You say you went into the wool
business daring the rebellion. Well,
I went into it just before, to the tune of
$12,000, and have not now a look to
show for it. But I suppose there
was this difference, you bought white
sheep and I black ones. My sheep
were never sheared, but they were
very profitable stock. And now one
of them has a strong inclination to
ran with me for the convention.
You insinuate that you would like
to know on which side I lost my
property. It was somewhat on both
Bides. The secesh burned my cotton
and the other Bide took my slaves,
and every poor devil in the country
who had a bag, helped to distribute
my corn. My mules and horses
Straight stole first, and then Forrest
rest?le them from Straight.
This unfortunate was evidently on
the fence, and thus exposed to a fire
both in front and rear.
Fut?;.-About 4 o'clock, Monday
morning, smoke was discovered issu?
ing from the doors and windows of
the two-story wooden buildinglocated
at the corner of Meeting street and
Burns' Lane. The alarm was gi von,
and the Fire Department succeeded
in quenching tho flames, but not
until the building had been seriously
damaged. The lower floor was occu?
pied by Mr. E. W. Eberhardt, as a
grocery, and tho upper as his resi
ence. It made such rapid progress
as to compel Mr. Eberhardt to effect
his escape by leaping from the win?
dow of tho tipper story, which he did
without suffering ?uy injury.

What merchant, oaks an exchange,
would be satisfied to do without his
morning bulletin of the stock and
produce markets, even were it to cost
ten times what it does?
No merchant, in this go-ahead age,
could do without it, or he wonld
soon be left behind in the race for
gold or even a competency. Upon
tho reports from the leading marts
of tho world, served up to him by
telegraph every morning, does he
base his actions. His plans are de?
termined by the movements of quo?
tations, and takes that course which,
in his judgment, will most quickly
realize his expectations of gain.
Now, this information on which he
acts, if he were compelled to obtain
it through any other sonrce than the
newspaperj would cost him a thou?
sand times the price of his subscrip?
tion and advertising united. Let
those interested take this matter into
consideration, and if they would act
^cording to their honest convictions,
journalism and journalists would
soon assume their rightful position

THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES, or
"SUCCOTH."-Yesterday was the first
day of the Festival of Huts, and it
was observed by the Congregation
Shearith Israel of this city-in the
morning, by appropriate religious
services in the synagogue, and after?
wards by a feast in au improvised
bower. Chambers gives tho following
account of this sacred feast:
"On the evening of the 14th day
Tishri, tho Feast of Tabernacles
commences. (Lev. xxiii, 42.) The
interval between the Day of Atone?
ment and this festival is employed in
preparations for this festive period.
Eaoh family fits up some room-espe?
cially built for this purpose-for a
booth, or erects ono in tho court?
yard or gardon, in which they take
their meal?. Auother peculiarity ol
this festival is the uso of a branch ol
a palm tree, of a willow, myrtlo and
citron. It is these whioh, according
to tradition, aro meant by Leviticus,
xxiii, 40. The willow branch and the
myrtle aro tied to the lower part ol
tho bough of the palm tree, but the
citron is kept separate; and it is the
duty of every congregation to pro?
vide these requisites for the use qi
the members. Grasping the palm
branch with the right hand, ?r? J
the lett the citron, and holding them
dose together, a benediction expres?
sive of the occasion is pronounced,
and i'm branch slightly shaken. Thu
ceremony is gone through every
morning during tho seven days ol
the festival, and by each individual
separately. No Jew would taste food
before tho performance of this rite.'
