EXPORTS OF COTTON.-The follow?
ing is an official record of tho exporta
of cotton during tho fiscal year ending
Juno 30, 1867, as compiled at the
Bureau of Statistics: Uplands and
sea island exported from all ports of
the United States, 667,137,870
pounds; value in ourrency, as de?
clared by the exporters on their
clearances, $202,870,910. Tho ad?
mixture of sea island with uplands
explains the seemingly high valua?
tion. Offioial comparison with the
foreign statistics reven?s the fact that I
the cotton on arrival abroad fully
realized in the market tho values
sworn to hero, although tho prico of
cotton declined since October last.
The exports of cotton for the fiscal
?rear ending June 30, 1866, were,
neludiug sea island cotton, 650,561,
829 pounds, valued at $581,885,223.
The director of the Statistical Bureau
is receiving returns showing the ave?
rage quantity of cotton seed sown to
the acre, tho estimated yield of cot- !
ton in bales, and the number of
pounds counted to the bale in each
locality of the entire cotton-growing
region of the United States. These
returns will, it is said, furnish com?
plete and comprehensive data on the
important subject, and will be pub?
lished officiully from tho Bureau of
Statistics.
A singular occurrence was witness?
ed at Stevens' Plains, near Portland,
last week. Two persons riding in a
severe thunder-storm were seriously
affected by tho electricity, and re?
covering from a heavy bolt, found
the horse, a light chestnut color
before the shock, to have changed to
a diamond black.
At tho lakes in tho Northern part
of Maine, last Monday, snow fell
to tho depth of ten inches. Atltum
ford, Oxford County, there was fonr
inches, which remained on the ground
and roofs of buildings all day. Such
a snow-storm was never known in
those regious in the mouth of Octo?
ber.
