COLUMBIA. Sunday Horning, October 13, 1867. Tho Cotton Crop ot Last Year. We have, publish ed several articles in relation to the extent of the cotton crop of 1866-67; but wo And in the New York Commercial Chronicle a much more, (apparently at least,) correct estimate of tho number of bales produced last year, and of the movements ol the staple, than any * wo have yet seen published. According to the Chronicle, the re? ceipts this year aro very .nearly as much as that of last year, being 2,019,271 bales, against 2,193.987 bales in the previous twelve months, which shows the small decrease oi 174,716 bales in the produce of the year, ending August 31, 1867. From this aggregate of produce must be deducted that portion of the old crop, brought forward at tho dose of 1865 and 1866-say. 300,000 bales which leaves 1,700,000 bales of the whole production of last year. The stock in the interior at this time is unusually small, and the receipts of cotton during the next twelve months must be looked for from the new crop. The total cotton export from the United States, for 1866-67 wac I, 052,311 bales, against 1,552,457 bales in 1866, and (taking no note ol the four years during the war,) 3,727 in 1861. So the present is about ' one-half of the former cotton export. The largest cotton crop of the South was in 1859-60, amounting tc 4,669,770 bales. It was 3,656,096 ii ,1860-61. Of the crop during th< war, only an estimate can be made some authorities at.3,300,000 balei during the four years; others as higl as 7,600,000 bales. In the first yea: after the war, it was 2,193,987 bales and this year it is very little less. Of the crop of 1866-67, more thai three-fonrths we're exported, leavin( 466,965 bales for home consumption Add to this what was on hand, thor are 586,307 bales of cotton in th Northern States for the year-. Northern consumption of abou II, 000 bales a week. As the larges crop was in 1859-60, (4,669,700 bales, so the greatest home consumptioi (972,043 bales) also was in that yent Tho home consumption in 1860-6 was 843,740 bales. There is no exac record for 1860-65, but 661.292 bale were consumed in the Norther States in 1865-66, and 656,307 i 1866-67. Tho iron whioh this cradle was formed weil 50,000 pounds. IMPORTART ARREST.-For BOOM time past, a company of bot-] a wed f reed mea, numbering about a dozen, have been squatted on Gen. Hamp? ton's land?, within ' five or H% miles of this .city, known os the" "Old Furnace Track.'' These freedmen, armed with guns and other warlike weapons, have on several occasions, stopped travelers and demanded their money, or their life. A warrant was made out for their arrest, which was referred to the military authorities, with a request that A military guard be assigned to assist in the capture of the desperadoes. Tho i et pu eal was immediately granted, and at 3 o'clock A. M, -, on Thursday last, tho troops, under the guidance of officer Beas? ley, marched to the "Old Furnace Track," and arrested eight of tho in* dividual*, who were brought before a magistrate yesterday, and were com? mitted to jail to stand trial for high? way robbery. It is to be hoped the remainder of the party will soon be under lock and key also. 1 C/uirleston Mercury. The last day, and before they had settled their bill, a disputer arose about tho speed of their horses. They at last settled upon a race, and appointed the landlord judge. When they were ready, tho jadge, like those of the Olympian games, gave the word-one, two, three, and go. Away they went, and have neither been seen nor heard of since. COLORED JURORS.-Ex-rebel Gov. Zeb. Vance, of North Carolina, was the first lawyer of noto who address? ed a colored jury in the second mili? tary district, empannelled under Gen. Canby's order. He addressed them os "gentlemen of the jury," and won his case. Thns far this class of jurors have given satisfaction to the North Carolina bar generally. [Forney. We learn from the Clayton Banner that in Barbour, as in Bussell and Montgomery, many negres went to the polls armed with guns. In Clay? ton, three of their number were ac . cidentally shot by the careless han? dling of fire-arms, and it was said that one of them was mortally wounded. OBITUARY. The Viceroy of Egypt, on leaving Vichy, made a gift of 16,000 francs to the municipality, for the founda? tion of a perpetual free admission to the free college of the department of the boy considered the poorest and the most intelligent in the town of Vichy. Senator Sherman, who is election? eering in Ohio, opposes female suf? frage. During a recent speech in Bellefontaine he stated, among other reasons, why women should not vote, that they are now well represented by their husbands, brothers and lovers. Some of the farmers of Alabama, wo see it stated, have already sent an agent for 400 Germans, and will have them comfortably provided for in ample time. That looks like busi? ness. The Richmond Dispatch learns from unquestionable authority, that there are 140,000 discharged negro soldiers now at work-mostly on farms in Virginia. Just Received. Ono of tho parties was intoxicated, and entering a saloon, asked for some re? freshments, which being refused, he made use of some very strong ex? pressions, which was resented by a colored man employed on tho pre? mises. Afterwards, the intoxicated individual became so noisy, that he wns arrested by the Chief of Police, when several hundred freedmen col? lected aro? iiu him, and threatened to release the prisoner-one individual going so far as to raise & club to strike the officer. A policeman in? terfered, and stopped the descend? ing blow.
