decided by Judge Sheffey at the re?
cent term of onr Circuit. Court.
Reube n Howard, a free negro, "ac- !
quired" his wife Milly, a' slave, by
purchase, some years before th#?war.
By his will, of date March 4, 185%, he
, emancipated his wife at his death.
Ho died in 1863, and his estate is not
sufficient to pay his debts if his wife
is entitled to dower. This woe the
question in tho case: "Is Milly How?
ard entitled to dower?"
Judge Sheffey decided that she is.

RAILROAD CONSOLIDATION-.-A pro?
posed railway consolidation of im?
portance is mentioned by the New
York Commercial Advertiser. .That
journal says the plan is to consolidate
the New Jersey Central, Camden and
. Axnboy, and Pennsylvania Central
railroads with Western connections!
and the Pacific Railroad, so that by
1870, three years from the present
timo, passengers can take the oars at
Jersey City and go through,without |
change to San Francisco. The under?
taking is certainly one of great mag?
nitude.
The earnings of the California!
Central Pacific Railroad for Septem?
ber were $400,000 in gold, and its
operating expenses $238,862, leaving
a net profit of $161,638. This was
with the track open for business to
the summit of the Sierra Nevada.
During this month, thirty-five miles
will be added to the running portion,
which will .bring it fairly in the Salt
Lake basin, and materially add to its
revenues.
