Wo hope tho prediction of the Agc

there still remains one obstacle to
completo success, and that is clinging
to party names that have become
obsolete. The issues upon which
said parties were founded, are become
defunct, dead and buried ; their
names, therefore,, only revive bitter
memories and long suspended party
animosities, and will doubtless kcej>
many of the weak-kneed of opposite
parties from joining the so-called
"Democratic party." Drop thc name,
and organize a conservative Union
party, whoso principles shall be sim?
ply based on the Constitution ?ind
tho rights and liberties guaranteed
by it-tho country needs such a party,
North and South, just now, and such
a party would, wo firmly believe, save
her from ruin.

have taken place to-day. My appear?

memorate. I shall not attempt to
givo utterance to tho feelings and
emotions inspired by tho addresses
and prayers which have been made,
and hymns which have been sung. I
shall innko attempt nt no such thiug.
I am merely here to give my coun?
tenance aud aid to tho ceremonies on
this occasion, but I must be permit?
ted to express my hope that wo mny
follow the example which hus been
so eloquently alluded to this after?
noon, and which hus been so clearly
sot by the illustrious dead. When
we look on yon battle-field, I think of
tho brave men on both sides who fell
in the fierco struggle of battle, who
sleep silent in their graves. Yes,
who sleep in silence and peuce after
tho earnest conflict has ceased.
Would to God we of the living could
imituto their example, us they lay
sleeping in peace in their tombs, and
live together in friendship and peuce.

had my efforts in timo gone by, in
tho earliest and most trying perils,
to preserve the Union of these States,
to restoro harmony to our distracted
and divided country, aud you shall
