Folioaoni Drlakt-How They are
On Wednesday night, last week, a
man in a state of intoxication was
arrested in Philadelphia, and taken
to the station. There he was searched,
and, among other things, was found
a black book, part of the contents of
which we print below. He asserted
that the receipts were worth $500 to
him, and that all the liquors to which
they referred were actually made in
that way. A sense of duty to the
public induces us to publish them,
that drinkers may seo what vile stuff
they are consuming. Tho man was
and is an altaclie of a distillery:
Brandy-Forty gallons of whiskey,
ono drachm of oil of cognac, one gal?
lon of syrup, one gallon of tincture
of catechu, etc., etc.
Bourbon Whiskey-Forty gallons
of whiskey, five gallons of rye whis?
key, two ounces of spirits of nitre,
half a drachm of oil of cognac.
Old Nectar Whiskey-Forty gal?
lons of whiskey, forty drops of Eril,
three and a half pints of sherry
wine, one pint of alcohol.
Blackberry Brandj'-Twenty gal?
lons of whiskey, one ounco of oil of
cinnamon, ene ounce of oil of cloves,
one ounce of oil of ginger, one
ounce of oil of nutimac, ono quart of
alcohol, etc., etc.; color with brandy
coloring.
Best Port Wine-Four gallons of
cider, five gallons of white whiskej',
ten . quarts of oil of cloves; one
pound of catawba root, ono gallon of
syrup, quarter of nn ounce of arrow
root, etc., etc.
Scotch Whiskey-Sixty drops of
kroosote, two ounces oil of smoke,
one quart of alcohol, etc., etc.
Peach Brandy-One ounce oil of
^bitter almonds, one quart of peaches,
^tyruised, one gallon of pure whiskey,
half a gallon of syrup, ono pint of
alcohol, in forty gallons of whiskey.
Lavender Brandy-One ounce of
bitter nlmouds, ono ounce oil of cin?
namon, ono ounce oil of lavender,
and forty gallons of whiskey; color
with cochineal.
Sherry Wine-Forty gallons of
whiskey, two gallons Jamaica rum,
one ounce of tincture of reno; two
ounces of patric acid, ono gallon of
syrup; color with cochineal.
Claret Wine-Forty gallons eider,
live gallons of white?whiskey, two
gallons of syrup, three gallons of
water, ono quarter pound of cream
of tartar; color to suit, etc.
Holland Gin-Forty gallons first
proof, three ounces of spirits of
nitre, half gallon of syrup, one gal?
lon of alcohol, carroway, quantum
suff., etc., etc.
Bitters-Twenty gallons of whis?
key, twenty pounds of sugar in
twenty gallons of water, varions
flavoi's, and the "brandy coloring."
Jamaica Hum-Forty gallons of
I whiskey, two gallons of Jamaica
rum, two ounces of tincture of reno,
two ounces of putric acid, one gal?
lon of syrup, etc.; color with cochi?
neal.
And this is tho way all the fancy
drinks that sleep in glittering bottles
in a thousand bar-rooms are made.
Whoso stomach, whoso brain could
stand such villainous concoctions?

There aro two men in prison, iu
England, whose fate it has been to
illustrate the nature of lawyers' bills
on a magnificent scalo. P. Foster,
a farmer, now lies in Taunton jail
for non-payment of a church rate
amounting to the sum of 15s. 7%d.
But tho cost of the law proceedings
by which he was condemned amount
to ?117 16s. 9V?d. J. B. Grant is
immured in Whitecross Street Prison
for non-payment of ?1 13s. chuch
rate, coupled with ?257 costs.
In the course of excavations nt the
West Dock works, Hull, England,
the navvies have come upon a stratum
of dork soil, in which a number of
trees in a horizontal position were
met with. They are oak, and in
excellent condition, and are remark?
ably hard. Besides these interesting
remains of a long past age, a largo
number of aComB and hazel nuts
were found, and some oyster and
mussel shells.

display of objection to the Methodist
polity, because, as he said, there was
"too much machinery to it" "Yes,"
responded Brother Allen, "there is a
good deal of machinery, bot it don't
toke so much water to run it as the
Baptist's does."
School-mistress (pointing to the
first letter of tho alphabet:) "Come,
now, what is that?" Scholar: "I
shan't tell you." School-mistress;
"You won't! but you must. Come,
now, what is it?" Scholar: "I shan't
tell you. I didn't come here to teach
you, but for you to teach me."
