The pro? prietor, in tho absence of any other news journal in the city during the unusually dull business months of this year, hns labored arduously to furnish to tho people of Columbia and of. the upper Districts a MEDIUM OF INTELLIGENCE, and at a heavy out? lay-having to bear the whole expense of telegraphic despatches, which it is the rule to divide among the journals published in a city-and bas given them the latest uews from twelve to twenty-four hours in advance of nny other paper. As before remarked, this was done at an expense which the receipts of tho paper, during an unprecedented season of business de? pression and of scarcity of money, could not be expected to remunerate, as tho old rates to subscribers and advertisers were strictly adhered to. As the season for tho revival of bu? siness, and harvesting the crops, is approaching, tho proprietor of the Phonix feels justified in placing tho claims of tho paper prominently be? fore the people among whom it circu? lates, and to ask them for a generous support, in tho way of subscription aud advertising, as well ns job work. Tho office is fitted up in complete order, with abundant material, and besides skilled and competent em? ployees in all departments, is nuder the personal supervision of the pro? prietor; wo feel, therefore, that we put forth our. claims with confidence. Having said this much for the past and present of the Phonix, we may be permitted to say that no efibrt will be relaxed to make it au ACCEPTABLE NEWSPAPER and a READABLE JOUBNAL. It may be, that with a return to some? thing like our former business pros? perity, wo shall still further enlarge our dimensions, as the wants of our readers and the community may re? quire.
