EDUCATION OP THE FRBEJD'MEN.
The citizens of Forsyth, Monroe |
County, have held a meeting to take
action regarding tho education of tho
colored people. We agree with tho
Monroe Telegraph in what it says of
this movement:
"Wo are glad to ?ee this move?
ment inaugurated,* and especially by
one of the most intelligent and con?
servative communities in thc State.
It is an indisputable fact that the
negroes- will be educated, and the
question for Southern people is, whe?
ther they shall bo educated in the
truth or in error. To say nothing of
what is due to that largo and now
important class of the community,
there is self-interest enough involved
to induce our people at once to enter
upon the task of intellectual and
moral enlightenment of the blacks.
Oar Monroe friends have set a good
example and given'spuud reasons for
their action. We commend their
views to tho people of the South
generally.'* ,
Tennessee now has thirteen cotton
factories in operation within her bor?
ders. Tho aggregate capital invested
is over $1,000,000, and 9,000 ope
ratives are employed.
