Tho Indian war costs, it is said,
$1,000,000 a week, nnd Gen. Sher?

would do the^yob cheaper tbau that
with their premiums of $20 a piece
for "scalps with tho ears ou," nud
though their warfare might not bo j
humane, it would bo rather more |
effectual than tho present system. If
the war must bo so barbarous or so

which, as wo learned the other day

Is $1,000,000 a week tho gross outlay,

NATIONAL ENTERTAINMENT,
For tho Benefit of the
LADIES' SOCIETY
In Aid of tho
Sulking nod Destitute Poor of thc South,
Will take place
In Washington, D. 0.. August 1, '67.
TITHE "Ladies' Society in aid of tho Suf
_L foriug and Destitute Poor of tho South''
would respectfully and earnestly call tho
attention of the generous Northern public
to tho great distress and fearful suffering
nov/ prevailing in the Southern States.
Letters aro daily received from tho South,
from the Generals Commanding, Govern?
ors, ministers and eminent citizens, fur?
nishing the most heart-rending details of
tho actual want, fr mine and starvation in
their immediate neighborhood. Tho fol?
lowing few extracts from tho very many
(otters received by tho Secretary and Ma?
nagers of the Society arc respectfully re?
ferred to:
H'DQUARTERS, 4TII MILITARY DlST.,
f Mississiri'i AND ARKANSAS.)
VicKsnuno, Miss.. May 13, 1867.
I ant glad to sec that the attention of the
gent?o and humane Indies of tim North is
being turned towards thc sad and desolate
condition of this once happy land.
Yon, Madam, surrounded with thc plenty
and comforts of a wealthy city, can scarcely
appreciate tho fact that, in many parts of
the Sont li, whole communities arc, by a
failure in crops and the absence of money
or its equivalent, left m want of the neces?
saries nf life; and that poor women, with
largo families of helpless children, so ac?
customed to depend on tho labor of others,
that now, with no husband, brother or
servant to help, and no money, they do not
know what to do or where to go for food;
but are left in tho solitudes of these South?
ern forests, in rags and gaunt with hunger,
subsisting on what the mother or larger
children can shoot or pick up in the woods,
or on what thc few neighbors, nearly as
po il- ;,s tin y are, can bring them.
Officers of my acquaintance havo met
with such mothers, long after dark, out in
the wood.-, with an old gun just tired, and
the coon or possum just killed; have gone
home with them and met the group of little
starvelings waiting patiently mother's re?
turn with sonic ol' tue only sort of food
they had tasted for weeks: and women and
children have been found within sixty mik s
of the capital of a Southern State, during
the past year, who had starved to death in
their lonesome cabins. These cases of
great distress are rare in Southern cities,
for there, even the most delicately bred can
generally lind some work which they can
do to kc?p the wolf from thc door; but the
farms or plantations in the South aro pe?
culiarly secluded, with miles of lorcst or
swamp between them, poor roads, and thc
stock and animals nearly all taken hy thc
war, tin- famine, the Hoods, or tho thieves,
who in such times infest a country, und the
distressed families aro often, by thc time
necessity makes them want to h ave, too
tick to travel on foot, and there is no other
way to go.
Vonr proposed entertainment, Madam,
should it produce only funds enough to re?
lieve a small fraction of thc destitution ol
this country, will bc a good beginning, and
maybe followed in other cities North bj
similar appeals to people who have happih
never felt the desolation and tho borr?n
which follow in thc tracks of great armlet
of invasion. God speed your society in tin
good work, is thc wish of, Madam, vonn
truly, E. U. C. OED,
Brevet Major-Gcucral.

in their behalf, that gratitude which is B<

Tho excellent purpose you have in vie\
cannot bo too much commended. The lib
erality of the Government ol' tho Cnitei
states, and thc munificent contribution
already made for the relief of ; ho wide
spread' destitution in the States, leave
great numbers unprovided with fond tm
clothing. And until au abundant harv? s
enables the people here to do more fo
themselves, I trust the ever generous an
prosperous committees of the North wil
continuo their noble gifts to this impovei
ished and a filleted population. With in
bert wishes for thc success of your uudei

Mr$? flarloiee Mather-MY DEAR MADAS
I shall be too glad if anything I can sa
will aid the society in ita noble work,
large proportion of "the people of the Boot
have suffered and many are still suffcrili
almost to the Inuit of endurance from th
devastation of war und subsequent failni
vi crops, i hey aro making every possib!
exertion tu revive their various braucht
of industry und become self-supnortliij
The liberal assistance which thc Norther
people are well able to givo, will relieve
great amount of distress, and will no doul
be sufficient to placo the poor of the Sont
beyond further suffering for food. Tl
recent manifestations of un almost nnive
sal desire throughout the South for a real
fraternalro-nnion with the North, may wt
sorvo to stimulate the generous svmpathii
of the Northern people, while nothing cou
do moro to foster and encourage the growl
of a healthy sentiment in tho South thu
tho generous aid which it is thc mission
your society to invoko. 1 sincerely no|
thc noble efforts of the society may resu
in the most abundant success. I am, dc:
Madam, verv respectfully, vonr obediei
servant, J."M. SCHOFIELD, Maj. Gen.
GREENSBORO, May 14, 18(57.
Have jost returned from a tour throng
the section made memorable by "She
man's march to the seaboard." Bovert
suffering and destitution of the people ci
scarcely be realized-living in huts, rude
constructed of charred boards, of rail
boughs and mud. you are met by hollo<
eyed, emaciated forms, whoso first won
aro "bread"-for something to atiflo tl
Craving? of hunger. In ono place, I wit
nctsed tho body of a child borne to ita last
reat, on a board, in the same raga in which
it died. In anothor, four females existed
for a week on two pounde of corn, together
with aoino roota. On tho road, I mot an?
other who had walked twolve miles to beg
some food for her children. Many other
biatanccg can bc given of sad suffering
from actual want of food. Very truly,
FREDERICK WATTS, M. D.
The public have already responded nobly
to tho call, but not to thc extent required
to keep starvation from making victims of]
many. Additional funds must be raised at |
once"; the case is urgent. The Lady Ma?
nagers, after mature deliberation, have
decided to bring it beforo tho generous
people of tho North, by giving a Grand
National Entertainment, trusting to their
activo co-operation and sympathizing aid
for tho immediate supply "of moana to en?
able them to purchaso and forward food
to starving thousands. Tho Grand Na?

Washington, D. C., August 1,1867. 300,000

which will take placo at tho some timo.
Half of tho amount will bo in valuable

Its remarkable curativo power is seen In

a dozen bottles."
Extract from a letter: "It is due to you
to state in this public manner, in order

I have tried your Queen's Delight, and

medicines without any benefit. 1 have
taken one bottle of your Quetu'a Delight,
the eruption ba? disappeared, my appetite
is better, my liver and digestion is ilil?
li, oved. I am satisfied one or two moro
bottles will cure me."
Extract from a letter: "At the close cf
the war, my constitution was shattered. 1
could not eat, sleeper perform any duty
whatever, snell waa my prostrate condi?
tion. Medicine and medical aid I had in
abundance, such waa my condition up to a
few months since, when I began tho uso of
your Queen's Delight. I have used two
Lotties, my constitution is greatly im?
proved, my appetite is good, enjoy relish?
ing sleep, and am able to perform my share
of daily labor."
Extriict from a 1? tter- Wonderful effect
of only ?no bottle: 'T have used only a
half bottle of 'Queen's Delight' for boils
and eruptions of thc skin and itching hu?
mors of the blood, which annoyed me very
much. I ara entirely curod. I think your

A remarkable case of liver complaint and
headache cured by tho uso of "HeinitBb's
Queen's Di light:" A lady of unquesiinned
worth and rt potation voluntarily gives tcs
limouy of tho wonderful effects of this

:i martyr to headaches, caused by imper?
fect action of the liver, producing intense
headache and pain over tho eyes. She has
taken only four bottles, and assur?e us of
tho perfect cufe it has made. She now en?
joys good health.
Still another: "During last spring, I had
. .ecu troubled with obstinate chill* and
lever, which, when cured, left my system
in a wretched condition, blood impure, and
l was afilicted v.ith an angry, and, as 1 at
one time thought, an incurable, cutaneous
eruption over my entiro body. Tho .most
violent remedies suggested failed to work
a cure, until, at the Instance of a friend, I
tried Dr. Heinitsh's Queen's Delight. Less
than two bottles cured me, h aving my skin
in a healthy condition. My general health
is as good as ever. Foi snob purooscs, I
have, over, since my cure, unhesitatingly
