Navy submitted a communication,
showing Farragut and Goldsborough

allegations regarding prisoners. A
colloquy ensued. Baldwin asked
Eldridgo whether ho expected the

ments against tho testimony and

Ould was an highly honorable and

Senate bill conferring on negroes the
right of holding office was amended

Judiciary Committee. A resolution
requesting the President to issue a
proclamation directing all proper
officers to prevent an invasion of

A Washington paper reports that
a linnie inscription has been disco?
vered near tho Grout Falls in the
Potomac; that it records the death
of au Icelandic woman named Suasn,
who died in 1051; that tho discovery
proves the visit of the Northmen to
our shores five centuries before tho
time of Columbus, and that they
made explorations inland. It is also
stated that fragments of teeth, bronze
trinkets, coins and other curious
things have been exhumed from the
grave.
A correspondent of tho Rochester
Union writes that the passengers of
the little steamer Flora City, on
Lake Ontario, were horrified the
other day at tho appearance of a
hugo serpent, which raised its mon?
strous head in front of the vessel's
bow, and projected its jaws toward
the promenade deck. Tho serpent
was about fifty feet long, and follow?
ed the steamer as a shark follows a
slave ship.
The Texas papers speak of a gene?
ral disposition among tho farmers of
that State to lessen tho quantity and
improve the quality of the land they
cultivate. This chango is caused by
tho scarcity of labor, which leads to
improved cultivation and an increase
of production from a given quantity
of land. Tho improvement in tho
system of cultivation in Texas will
ultimately extend to all parts of the
South.
Two outlaws named Farmer and
Herrin were shot and killed by citi?
zens of Craighead County, Arkansas,
a fow days ago. They had, in com?
pany with two men named Mount,
committed soveral jobberies and
murders in the neighborhood, and
woro killed while resisting au attempt
to arrest them.
