but this noble susceptibility should

The extreme radicals held a small

The Cabinet session to-day is rep?

from the Generals Commanding, Govern?
ors, ministers und eminent citizons, fur?
nishing the most heart-rending details of
the actual want, famine and starvation in
their immediate neighborhood. The fol?
lowing few extracts from thc very many
letters received by the Secretary and Ma?

I am glad to see that the attention of the
gentle and humane huhes of the North is
heing turned towards the sad anti desolate
condition of this once happy laud.
You, Madam, ?urrounded With thc plenty
ninl comforts ol wealthy city, can scarcely
appreciate the fact that, in many.parts of
the South, whole communities arc, hy a
failure in crops and the absence <>f money
or its equivalent, lett in want of the neces?
saries of life; and that poor women, with
large families of helpless children, so ac?
customed to depend on the labor of others,
that now, with no husband, brother or
se rvant to help, anti no money, they do not
know what to do or where togo for food;
l>ut are left in the solitudes of these South?
ern fort s's, in rags and gaunt with hunger,
subsisting on what the mother or larger
children can shoot 'ir pick up in the woods,
or on what the tew neighbors, nearly as
poor as they are, can brin;; them.
Officers of my acquaintance have met
with such mothers, long alter dark, out in
the woods, with an old gun just tired, and
thc coon or possum just killed; have gone
home w ith them and met the group of little
starvelings waiting patiently mother's re?
turn with some of thc only sort of food
they hail lasted for weeks; and women and
children have been found within sixty miles
Of the capital of a Southern State, during
the past year, who had starved to death in
their lonesome cabins. These cast's of
great distress are rare in Southern cities,
for thorn, even the most delicately bred can
generally lind some work which they eau
do to kei p the wolf from thc door: but thc
farms or plantations in thc South aro pe?
culiarly secluded, with miles ot forest or
swamp between them, poor roads, and the
stock and animals nearly all taken hy the
war, the famine, tho floods, or tho thieves,
wht) in blieb times infest a country, anti tho
distressed families arc often, by the time
necessity makes them want to leave, too
sick to travel on foot, and there is no other
way to go.
Your proposetl entertainment, Madam,
should it produce only funds enough to re?
lieve a small fraction of the destitution of
this country, will he a good beginning, and
may be followed in other cities North by
similar appeals to people who have happily
never felt the desolation und thc horrors
which follow in the tracks of great armies
of invasion. God speed your society in the
