Sherman's camp, in tho Platte Valley, says that tho General is not disposed to be harsh towards the Indians. Much of tho thieving he believes to bo dono by whites, and then charged upon tho Indians. Few, if any, of our military men aro so rapid to grasp the situation and prompt to act as is Gen. Sherman. Thero is nothing sluggish about him, aud he is tho man to work out the Indian problem, if it can be done. Turning to a distinguished Senator, he said: "You cau*seo from tho ap? pearance of tho country wo cannot fight Indians -with infantry; you may hold a lew posts with them, but be? yond that they aro worthless. "Wo , want cavalry; but how are wc going to subsist them hundreds of miles away from a railroad, where n horse canuot carry ten days' subsistence with him? and do you know," he con? tinued, "that it wall cost near a thou? sand dollars to subsist a cavalryman one year? It can't bo done. Thc belt of country over which they roam is too wido to be swept by cavalry, and we must abandon the idea aud first protect tho construction of the Union Pacifio Railroad, the most important enterprise over undertaken, which will settle tho Indian troubles faster than any other means." Turning to Mr. Covode, ho said: "You claim to bo the first pioneer in this work, but you only orgauized your company nt Omaha in 185G, while I organized a company two years earlier in San Francisco, since which tiree I have watched closely every step forward that the road has taken, and I am determined that there shall be no interference with it so fur as I am concerned." There aro no Indians to bo feared along its line at present, as the sta? tions are all too well armed, and thero are no hostile bands in their vicinity, The Arch-duchess Matilda, tho in? tended wife of Prince Humbert, of Italy, a Princess, in her nineteenth year, by all accounts endowed with rare gifts of person, mind and heart, died in Vienna on tho morning of June G. She inadvertently trod on a Lucifer match, which was lying at her feet on the floor, as she leaned out at the window talking to one of her relatives. Her summer dress was in a blaze befere she wtus awaro of it, and before any one could run to her rescue, she sank to the ground in an agony of pain from which oi ly death released her. ItELiGiousFANATICISM.-One of tho most disgraceful exhibitions of reli? gious fanaticism is tho persecution of the Jews in tho new State of Itou mania, instigated by a ministry whose members heretofore laid claim to tho name of Liberals. Tho Governments of France and England acted nobly in promptly and energetically inter? fering in behalf of tho persecuted Jews. It is announced that the Hun? garian Government is considering measures for tho emancipation of the Jews of that country. Iii:-ACTION IN P?KLIO OPINION. The Connecticut election indicated a dccitlcd change in tho current of Opinion. An election just'held in Illinois shows that tho conservative ro-actiou is oven moro decided Wost than East. The second grand divi? sion of tho State, which gave 8,044 majority for tho radicals in Novem? ber, now elects a Democratic con? servative for judge by a majority of 4,000. _ Gen. Grant was in Washington, Pa., last week, to attend the wedding of his cousin ; nnd a local paper says ho remained but a short time, said little, smoked much, and talked sen? sibly. THE EIGHTS OF MINORITIES. Among other reforms advocated iu tho British Parliament by tho philoso? pher of that body, John Stuart Mill, is tho right of minorities to repre? sentation. It is a strange fact that, in countries whero popular suffrage is the recognized basis of Govern? ment, tho minority, however large, should bo smothered by tho majority, however small. To remedy this ano? maly, Mr. Mill proposes that tho House be composed on the basis of ono member for every 3,000 vcjtcs cast, and that nvery candidate who receives that mu iber be returned, iu whatever part of tho country his voters may live. In this way, the unrepresented minorities of several Boroughs or Counties might combino and secure a member of Parliament. Tho difficulties in tho way of this plan arc easily surmounted. There would naturally be a tendency for thc most popular or eminent candidates to engross nearly all the votes, where local interests dui not interfere; but, by counting no more than 3,000 votes for each candidate, and allowing each voter to put upon his paper a second or third name, which should bc counted in case his first choice should have a superflous number, tho pro? portion could, bo maintained. In this mnnner there would bo repre? sented, not only organized parties, but all opinions entertained by a cer? tain number of people in common, which now have to take their chances in tho general scuffle. THE LOUDEST TALKERS.-One of our exchanges hits the truth in the followiug: "Thc men who .'ought,'' it says, "have yielded more readily to tho Congressional plan of recon? struction than those who stayed at homo. Generals, who will bo dis? franchised by the constitutional amendment, recommend its accept? ance, while men who only talked trea? son, and kept their precious bodies out of harm, arc full of patriotic de fiauce!" This is the case everywhere. I Files, tho man who disturbed the Mobilo meeting, aud interrupted Mr. Kelley's speech, occupied a "bomb? proof during the entire war; and those men who talk the loudest in bar-rooms and on street corners were never guilty of striking a blow against thc Union. But while acknowledg? ing the truth of this, when it suits their purpose to do so, the radicals make the entire Southern peoplo re? sponsible for the fn-.ts of those few mon who took no part in tho war, aud who now talk loudly for fear ol' being considered cowards. During tho siege of Qucretaro, the ? women of the city carried, food and drink to tho soldiers in tho trenches, aud spent much of their time with them, at the peril of their lives. Many thus fell victims to their conjugal de? votion. Ono was shot through the breast by a bullet, which likewise killed tho infant strapped to her breast. A second had her head taken off by a round shot. A third was killed by a bullet in thc plaza. A New York journal states that a large business is dono in selling old revenue and postage stamps, which have been already once used-the can? cellation of them being washed off in some way. An individual, who had offered a stamp of this kind for salo, was brought before tho United States Circuit Court, a day or two ago, and, pleading guilty, was lined ?'50. At the mouth of what is known ns Gay Gulch, in Colorado Territory, it is said that some oue has put up a stake, ou which is written a list of water power and other claims in that neighborhood. Tho claimants have certainly claimed enough, but, on the other side, is written, "I claim all creation, and my wife claims the ba? lance, beginning at the stake."
