The old man bowed his head as he

back of his hand. It was a bright
drop, and tho rays of tho sun were
playing in it.
"She cried wheu she kissed me,"
ho whispered, wiping the tears from
his hand; "I don't see what makes
her so tender hearted-she never
took it from mo. But she may have
taken it from-"
Tho old man stopped, and a cloud
cloud came over his wrinkled brow,
for there was a pang iu his heart.
He remembered the gentle, uncom?
plaining beiug who had ouce been
his companion, the motlier of his
child. Ho remembered how sho be?
came his wife, even when the bloom
of manhood had passed from him,
and cared for him, and how she
taught her child to love and care for j
him, too; and ho remembered how ;
she had never complainod, oven while
suffering, and how she had died with
a smile and a blessing upon her lips,
though tho gold of her husband
brought hor no comforts.
Noah Bremen bowed his frosted
head more low, and in his heart he
wished ho could forget all but the few ,
fleeting joys of his wife. But ho \
could not forget. He could not for- '
got that it had been whispered how ?
his wifo might have lived longer, had
she had proper clothing ami medical
attention.
"But it would have cost so much;
I saved money!"
Ah, thc reflection would uot remove ;
the pang. Thc other memory was '
uppermost.
Noah Bremen had passed the allot?
ted age of men, being over three?
score and ten, and all his life had bren
devoted to tho accumulation of mo?
ney. He had denied himself every
comfort,'and his heart had buen al?
most as hard as tho gold ho hoarded.
But as his hair grew more white and
sparse, and tho years grow more hea?
vily upon bim, he thought more-re
tlected more. The sweet smile of bis
wifo was cloiug its mission now; and
tho pure love of his gentle child was
a continual remembrance to him
that there were bi tter hearts than his
own.
At length, tho miser arose and
Enssed out of the room. Ho would
ave loft the hut, but as ho reached
the little entry way, ho heard a voice
from the garrot. It was his child's.
He crept up the rickety stairs, nxxA
looked through, a crack in the door.
Ho saw Agnes upou her knees. Tears
were rolling down her, cheeks, and

The old mau crept down stairs aud
out of doors, aud, for a wholo hour,
he walked alone among the trees. He
thought again of his wile-agaiu of
his chili-and then of his gold! And

Agnes, wept long and bitterly in bel

paper curtain, and saw Walter Adams
with his child. Her head was upon
Walter's shoulder, aud his arm was
about her.
Walter was au orphan, and had
been Agnes' schoolmate, and her fer?
vent lover through all the virtuous
man, aud loved the gentle girl be?
cause she was so good and gentle,
and so beautiful. Aud she loved him,
not only becauso ho was, of all her
suitors, tho only one whose character
aud habits promised joy aud peace
for the future.
"I cannot leave my poor old father,
Walter," tho old mau heard his
daughter* say. "I must livo to love
and care for him. Ou all tho earth 1
am tho only one left to love him. It
is hard! My heart may break-bul
tho pledge of love I gave to my dying
mother must bo kept."
"Aud so the groat joy dream of my
youth must be changed to this sad
reality. I cannot ask you to leave
your father, sweet Agnes, for thc
very truth iu you which I worship

so. But I have a prayer. I pray thal
God in his mercy may remove thc
curse from your father's bended
form."
"The curse, Walter!"
"Aye, tho Gold Curse," rejoined
tho youth fervently. "I hope O od
may render him penniless."
"What? Pennyless?" repeated Ag?
ues, with a start.
"Aye, pennyless; for then ho would
bo far moro wealthy than he is now.
Then he would know how to appre?
ciate the priceless blessing of his
sweet Agues' love, aud then the crus!

"You have your money safe," said
Agnes,
"Yes. Sec, I took the trunk. I
loft the camile burning so that I
could watch it. But I went to sleep,
and tho candle must have fallcu over.
But I got the trunk." As ho spoke
he htdd it up and gazed upon it by
tho light of the Haring ruins.
l'Tloi'. ain't the trunk!" whispered
Agnes in affright.
"NOT-." But tho old tuan
spoko no further. Ho said he had
taken the wrong trunk. This was
only filled with the old deeds and
rusty receipts.
' limned! Lost!" groaned Noah
Bremen, as ho turned from the scat?
tered embers. "I had ?30,000 in
that trunk, and whore are they now."
"Xever mind," said Agues, wind?
ing her anus about her father's neck,
"we'll bc happy without it."
