Church Sleeping.
Some vain persons have been so ]
weak and wicked as to roiso a ques?
tion, upon the merits of the case
yes, they havo gono so fnr ns to say
that sleeping in church, so far from
being a duty, is absolutely, and, to
all intents and purposes, a sin. Thoy
allege that tho church was built for
the purpose of Divine worship, and
it is an insult to our Creator to go to
sleep in it. They further allege that
it is disrespectful to the speaker and
to ourselves to do so. This is going
a dreadful length, and only another
instance of the radical and extreme
tendencies of tho age. What! that a
sin which has existed in the church
from the days of tho apostles them?
selves, even under Paul's preaching!
You remember the striking example
of that worthy young man, Eutiohus.
A Bin indeed! It is not a sensible act
in me to waste time and arguments
upon such vain cavilers. The uni?
form practice of tho church (espe?
cially on warm afternoons) for eight?
een hundred years is decisive.
Assuming, then, that it is a duty,
let us consider the manner of per?
forming it. I hold that, like all
other Christian praotices, there ought I
to be uniformity in tho manner. Wo
find it in all the other parts of wor?
ship; ?. e., all sit while the sermon is
being delivered, all stand or kneel |
while prayer is being offered. Why,
then, should those who are engaged |
in offering np sleep-worship not con?
form to some one attitude?
1st. It is an improper manner of
performing this duty to nod, and for
the plain reason that tho worshipper
attracts too much attention. Now,
we are taught to avoid ostentatious
display in our worship. The Phari?
sees were condemned for praying at
the corners of the streets, that they
might be seen of men. On the samo
principle, the nodding worshipper is
condemned, for ho is making too
public a display of his devotions.
Those in his immediate vicinity, in-1
stead of attending to their own wor?
ship, are lost in admiration of the |
profound state in which his devo?
tional meditations have placed hin.
Peradventure they may envy his con?
dition and thereby break the tenth |
commandment.
2d. Nor is it proper to snore in tho |
performance of this duty-partly for
the foregoing reasons, but mainly |
because it is a direct infraction of the
golden rule. Suppose, for instance,
that your next neighbor is asleep ; by I
your snoring, he will be disturbed- ]
probably awakened. This, you per?
?oive, is not doing to others as you
would that they should do unto you.
3d. I deem it unchristian to sleep
with tho head thrown back and the
mouth wido open. It is wrong to
injure ono's health while offering
worship; and all physicians admit
that such a position is liable to pro?
duce sore throat and hoarseness.
Besides, flies sometimes get into tho
mouth on such occasions, and by
their injurious explorations, ticklo
the delicate membranes, and cause
horrible sternutation and coughing
which, I am told, are very injurions
to health.
4th. To sleep with tho head resting !
on the arms of the worshipper, und
the face buried up in tho cuffs of tho
coat, is tho most improper way of
offering sloep-worslnp. First, be?
cause it is injurious to health, and is
altogether a very unsufo way of per?
forming tho duty ; and secondly uud
mainly, because it ?3 a siu-n direct
violation of the Scriptures, which
command us to let our light shine
that men may profit by our example.
In this case, it is impossible to know
whether tho Christian worshipper is
asleep or awake. It is a positive oaso
of lukewarmness-neither the one
thing nor the other.
My cogitations hare well nigh ex?
hausted tho subject. Let me, then,
say, that the only truly pious way of
performing the important duty of
sleeping in church is to sit upright,
faceto the minister, eschewing nod?
ding, snoring and depressions of the
head.
PIODS GAMBLING DENOUNCED.-At
the recent convocation of the Epis?
copal clergy of Western Tennessee,
at Bolivar, Bishop Quintard delivered
an address in which occurs the fol?
lowing against a very common prac?
tice of tho day: A
My dear and reverend brethren, I
would have you bear in mind how
necessary it is for na to do the Mas?
ter's work in his own way. Tho very
moment wo depart out of that way,
we cause men to stumble at the law
of Christ and mako our ministry a
by-word and a reproach. "Tkereforo
have I also inado you contemptible
and base before all the people, accord?
ing as yo have not kept my ways,"
saith the Lord.
When thoughtful men of tho world
arc at a loss to apologizo for practices
in which Christians thoughtlessly
indulge, surely it is timo for tho pas?
tors of Christ's flock to lift a voiceof
warning and admonition. I chargo
you, before God, that yo bc not re?
miss iu rebuking sharply, and with
all authority, not only the worldliness
which wo so much deplore, but espe?
cially those vicious practices which
havo gained popularity among Chris?
tian people for raising money to do
the Lord's work. It is treason ngaiust
God and his Christ to givo counte?
nance to such evil measures.
If men will not do their duty and
pay what they owo (their tenth) unto
tho Lord-if they will not otter to
God of substance-if they will not
lay their gifts upon tho altar-then
warn them boldly and fearlessly that
God will either take their riches from
them or them from their riches. If
they will not build churches from a
senso of tho natural decency of
things, that God's name may be reve?
renced without resorting to means
aud appliances which outrage all
sense of religion and break down all
tho barriers of public morality-then
far better for us to worship under tho
blue arches of heaven.
