??^. loy Tel??rapn. j Expressly for the Cohaiibia Phoenix.} Ti KW? Items. RICHMOND, Juno 20.-Thomas B. White and Mark Downey, two r.JA known citizens, wore arraigned be? fore the United States Commissioner this morning, charged with perjury in having taken the registration oath yesterday. The United States Dis? trict Attoruoy said that in tho first case the prosecution would be on the grouud that tho State constitution adopted by tho convention at Alexan? dria disfranchised all persons who aided the rebellion after April, 1SG4. This constitution, it is stated, is not Bet aside by tho reconstruction bill. About nine-tenths of the whites iii tho State will bo disfranchised if the District Attorney's ground is sustain? ed. Both cases were continued till to-morrow. There is great interest manifested by all classes of citizens ia tho cases. WASHINGTON, June 20.-Advance copies of tho Attorney-General's re? cent opinion were forwarded to cer? tain newspapers by himself, the mat? ter being iu his own hands, and conducted by him independently of the Press Agency. The President leaves Northward in the morning. Prominent citizens of New Orleans have telegraphed to the President, urging King, of the Times, for the Mexican mission. General Longstreet has been par- ? doned. CONSTANTINOPLE, June 18.-A col-j lectivo note, from tho French, Bus-1 sian, Prussian and Italian Govern- j ments, was presented to the Porte on ] Saturday last, urging a suspension of hostilities in tho Island of Candia, and recommending that inquiry be ruado itito the grievances of the Cre taus, to be conducted by a joint com? mission, appointed by the great pow? ers and the Sublime Porte. NEW Youie, Juno 20.-Venezuela advices report the safo arrival at Guayama of a schooner loaded with emigrants from Wilmington, N. U. The Ti mes has the following: Santa Anna landed at Vera Cruz on the 4th, and was compelled to re-embark. He proceeded to Sisal, where he was captured by the Liberals, court-mar? tialed, and sentenced to bc shot on the 8th. No further particulars. PHILADELPHIA, June 20.-The Va? rieties Theatre is totally burned. The audience, fortunately small, escaped with some bruises in crowding out. Subsequently, the falling walls killed six, certainly-probably there are more in tho ruins. Fattie Stewart, one of the proprietors, is missing. LATER.-Thirteen dead and thirty wounded from last night's fire have been recovered. CHARLESTON, Juno 20.-General Sickies has issued a circular explana? tory of certain paragraphs of Order No. 32, chiefly with regard to the sus? pension of sale of distilled spirits. By order of Gen. Sickles' all bar? rooms and drinking saloons are to be closed-inns alone being permitted to dispose of spirituous liquors in small quantities-on July 1. The Jackson (Tenn.) Wliig says: "A party of gentlemen, in digging a ditch, in Hatchic bottom, in this County, a few weeks ago, for the pur? pose of draining a slough, found im? bedded in hard clay, at the distance of five feet from thc surface, a large turtle, alive and in good condition. How it came there, and on what it fed, are mysteries that we leave for naturalists and geologists to explain." The proprietors of the Hagcrstown (Md.) mail have brought suit to reco? ver damages for the destruction of that otlice by a mob in Maj-, 18G2. Several other citizens have also brought suit to recover for th^ de? struction of their property from a similar cause. Those who chose to dance must pay the piper. A negro, named John Vandyke, was last week convicted, at New Haven, Ct., on lifteen separate charges of indecent assaults upon children, and sentenced in each cuso to six mouths in the County jail, and to pay a line of $100. As be is unable to pay, his sentence will amount to about twenty-three years. 0?0 gold medals are to bo distri? buted at tho Paris Exposition. COM .11K It CI A I. A.\D FINANCIAL,.
