A method of propelling boats, now j
in use in Franco, has been introduced
upon tho Erie Canal, at Buffalo, New
York. By this system, a stool wire,
five-eighths of an inch in diameter,
is laid along tho centre of thc entire
length of tho canal. Tho wire cabio
runs over n drum on tho deck of tho
boat, and a small eugino of four
horse power turns the drum, aud the
boat is thus drawn along, It is claim?
ed that a boat of 250 tons may be
pulled along in this way at the rate
of two miles per hour, with a con?
sumption of only 1,200 pounds of |
coal in twenty-four hours.

Journal of Commerce says there is a
remarkable chango in the aspect of
African colonization. The freed ne- {
groes now begin to crowd applica?
tions for passago to Liberia. Up?
wards of a thousand have beou sont |
ont within the past year. Rev. Dr.
Olcut, tho well-known Secretary of]
the American Colonization Society,
has been invited to New York to aid
in the cause, and we learn that he is
successful to a consid?rable extent.
The only hope of Africa is in this
cause.
