ENTERPRISE, MISS., May 10, 18(37.
MESSRS. EDITORS: Wo must now
conform to thc law-making power,
right or wroug. Wo cannot stop
now to inquire into the Acts of Con?
gress. Wo have to govern ourselves
according to tho mandato that has
been issued. Ho who counsels to
the contrary is an unsafe loader at
this time. Wo must moot tho mea?
sures as they present themselves.
Wo nre a defeated people. To the
sword was left tho arbitrament of
questions involving all our rights in
the premises; that two-edged instru
meut has cut asunder every principle
contended for by tho South. Weare
no longer a people to dictate terms;
there is no alternativo left but to
snbmit to tho powers that be. We
aro now in ail attitude never contem?
plated by auy party in the laud. Tho
negro now presents himself ns a freo
citizeu, clothed in all the habilameuts
of sovereignty-made so by a power
which wc aro unable to resist; and it
now behooves us to shape our ,policy
as to act in harmony within the order
of things as they present themselves.
Tho course marked out for us to
pursue is a very plain one, both in a
political and pecuniary point of view.
Inaction in tho premises will prove
fatal to us and to our posterity. The
question now presents itself in this
wise-what shall we do to be saved?
Tho solution is at hand-go to work,
remodel the State Governments ac?
cording to thc law of Congress, de?
velop tho "industrial resources" of
the South-agricultural and manu?
factories. Take South Carolina, for
instauco. No State in tho Union has
greater resources. I know the old
\ State well; 1 know the material she
is possessed of; I have worked bel?
lands, and I have for tho last twenty
years worked the lands here. Take a
series of years, and a planter will
realize as much in South Carolina as
he will here. There are no better
farming lands than are to be found
on tho Con garee ami Wateree Rivers
-in fact, on all your principal riv rs
and creeks. You have ono very im?
portant feature over our Western
lands-that is, the locality of your
lauds; their contiguity to healthy
and desirable settlements aro to be
found everywhere. Add to that your
water power for manufacturing pur?
poses, and the facility for getting
their produce to all parts, should
stimulate your people to act in uni?
son, and harmonize yourselves with
the new state of things in your midst.
I love South Carolina, "with all her
faults.'" (Really, I do not know
that she has any more than the other
Southern States-not one-tenth ns
much as some other States I could
mention.)
I think the freedmen of your State,
in leaving it to hunt work in tho
other States, are pursuing an unwise
course. They are not at this time
fully prepared to travel about as the
white man doe.;. They lind better
remain in their old neighborhoods;
they will find that their former
owners are their best friends.
The day they commence, immigra?
tion, from that period they may date
tho commencement of their extinc
tion as a raco; as thc Indian has
gone, so will tho negro. Parcel out
your lands among tho freedmen-sell
to them upon such terms as they and
you eau live. They must become
identified in the soil; they will then
vote with you on all important ques?
tions-your interest will bo theirs
they will soon learn to sustain the
policy which will add to their pros
perity and happiness.
The negro is moro to bo relied on
than tho foreigner. Before you can
learn the latter-at least by tho timo
you learn him-to cultivate cotton
nnd rico, ho will leave you. You have
tho destiny of yourselves and chil?
dren in your own hands; fashion it
so that no detriment will follow in its
wake.
Our freedmen are doing very wo1',
out hore-no troublo with thom; if
they were let alono, they would ROOU
becomo as happy aud contented ns

Our crops aro backward; tho senson
is now moro favorable for a full crop
than at this time last jour. If the
seasons aro favorable throughout,
plenty of provisions will bo made.
Small grain-prospects good.

rule of testimony, which enables
husband and wife, or either of them,
to bo a witness for or against tho
other, or on behalf of any party, in
certain eases.
A joint, stock company is being
formed in New Albany, for tho pur?
pose of engaging extensively ill
tin; manufacture of boots nnd shoes.
Why should not such companies be
formed still further South?*'
A gentleman crossing Lake Erie,
the other day, became sea sick, and
going to the side of the boat to "cast
up accounts," unfortunately east
overboard a costly set of artificial
teeth.
