TERRIFIC; THUNTDER-STORM.-Last
Tuesday, tho 14th inst., our town
was visited by a bombardment from
"tho red artillery on high," which
alarmed many of our citizens, es?
pecially those of delicato nervous
libre-and well might they be, for
thc frequent Hashes of lightning,
closely accompanied with deafening
reports of thunder, very plainly in?
dicated that danger was not distant;
the moro so, when wo are informed
that tho town was struck in four or
five places, and ono negro instantly
killed and others somewhat injured.
There is much 3'et to bo learnt about
thc eccentricities of lightning; tall,
upright objects in exposed places,
so often escaping, nnd smaller ones
more protected rent in twain, and
torn to atoms by tho annihilating
thunderbolt. "Wo understand this
was the case in the recent storm,
which seemed to expend much of its |
fury in its transit over our town.
