A barrel, containing ashes, in the
basement of a building on thc corner
of State and Congress streets, Bos?
ton, took fire on Friday evening, nud
melted a gos meter fixed to the wall
near it. The consequence was a tre?
mendous explosion, which threw up
the side-walks along both fronts of
tho building, and hurled tho frag?
ments through the windows on the
opposite sido of tho Btreet. For?
tunately, no person was injured.
The Old North Slate says that,
during the severe rain and hail-storm
on Tuesday night of last week. Mr.
Daywalt Lents, of Rowan County,
