of a letter received in Charleston,

who still think that, under our pre?
sent circumstances, tho chief crop
laid this season ought to be cottou.
As. it gives practical results, it is
worth a hundred theories on tho sub?
ject:
We verily believe that if our plant?
ers pursuo the same system of plant?
ing they did last year one more year,
they will produce a famine . in the
land. The cry for bread and meat
on plantations now is almost alarm?
ing. We . enclose you a statement
handed us a fow days since by a
friend, which will give you somo idea
of tho system in practice last year.
Tho gentleman who mado up the'
statement is a practical planter, and a
man of undoubted integrity, and so
aro tho other names attached, and wo
have no doubt as to the correctness
of the figures. After deducting the
rent for the land and mules from the
losses, (which is a profit to the own?
ers,) there ' is still a loss of about
$30,000, and nearly all of this results
from tho difference of provisions
consumed and produced. Wo should
hesitate now to hazard an opinion
relative to tho extent of the crop of 1
1867, but we believe, that if there
should bo 3,000,000 bales made, that
a famine will follow. Wo 'hardly
think it possible for the labor now
available, in tho country to make a
large crop of cotton and provisions
enough to subsist tho inhabitants, a
system which must bo adopted before
we can be prosperous, and ono that
will bo adopted so soon as our people
seo that they cannot prosper nuder
any other, and ono, too,- which will
prevent any over-production in cot?
ton. Wo think that this system is
being pursued to some extent tho
present year, and hope it may yet
bocome giperal before tho planting
is over, an ?, if so, it will l?avo a great
influence in diminishing .tho produc?
tion of cotton the present year. '
A detailed and elaborate statement
of results of cotton planting on four?
teen plantations in tho cane-brako or
black land region of Green County,
Alabama, taken at random, worked
by old and hitherto successful plaut?
ers, which statement is now before
us, shows tho following results from
tho crop of 1866: Cost of production
of cotton and corn, $242,094; pro?
ceeds of crops, 3137,015; losses on
planting, $105,079. Th's is tho finest
cotton land in Alabama, and suffered
most from injury to crop. Had tho
results been the same throughout tho
cotton region, the crop of 1866 would
not have reached 1,000,000 bales.
When tho Stato constables called
itt the saloon of Iko Hudson, at
Westfield, Muss., thc other day, ho
slipped the chain from a largo black
bear which ho keeps, and retired to
an ante-room to await results. Tho
officers opened tho door, and the
bear courteously advanced to give
thom a friendly embrace. Tho door
was quickly shut again, ond no sign
of a constable has been seen nround
the place since.
The SheneCt%dy (lfSw York) Star
says: Tons 'of butter are passing
down on the railroads. Some of it
has been hold for a long time, and,
after being re-worked) is sent to mar?
ket. There being no hope of further
advance or safety in longer keeping,
it must be sold, to avoid losses. This,
wo suppose, is tho "strong" butter
frequently sold by onr auctioneers.
