Tho Richmond correspondent of
the New York Herald says that thc
general tone of thc two houses of the
Virginia Legislature indicate thc
acceptance of the new Act of recon?
struction. Ho adds: "Everycircum?
stance shows a far hotter feeling herc |
chan has existed for many a day, and
;ii the people's minds the military
bill lias been as good as accepted.
.Such a slate of affairs is not only plea?
sant, but cheering. Virginia will now !
iead the way, and her action will de- !
termine that of all the other South-j
ern states. Under such favorable |
auspices, a restored Union and'a once '
more happy and prosp?rons era in the
history ol' our country may lie loni.; .!
for at an curly day."
In Italy, at Pasillipo. a superin?
tendent of public works was detected
in thc crime of stealing powder. A
party of police paid him a visit, and I
found ample proofs of his crime. (Ju
seeing that his frauds were discover?
ed, he found a pretext for entering a
room where about six quintals of
powder wore stored, and setting fire
'hereto, blew himself, the police and
nil else who were near, into eternity.
Of sixty-three persons who were on
the spot at the time, twenty were
found dead, eleven wounded, seven
unhurt and tin; rest nowhere.

Thanking our fri? nds for th< ir past con?

lt may seem unnecessary to add a single
word to the above address, but calls upon
the institution have been so numerous ami
pressing, and the struggle through which
it is now passing to widen thc circle of its
charities, is of such an arduous nature,
that thc management cannot too strongly
urge upon the humane and pathetic every?
where ar. active participation in this addi?
tional attempt to alleviate the sad condi?
tion of great numbers of helpless children,
rendered thus by the terrible war through
which we have passed. And, assuredly,
whatever may have bei n the relative po?
litical views of huhes and gentlemen here?
tofore, all must agree that the children
referred to could not, by any possibility,
have had any agency in bringing about
their present deplorable and destitute con?
dition, and arc suitable objects for thc
charity of all persons, of whatever shade
of political opinion. The "Homo and
School" which they now more particularly
seek to establish and endow, will bc Of in?
calculable benefit, by providing not only
food and raiment for these helpless ones,
but likewise solid and thorough education:
thus qualifying them for future usefulness
to society at large.
In order that this appeal may bc off? ct

operation of all classes of persons every?
