to ask the National Republican Com?
mittee to appoint a member from
each unreconstructed State.
The President has approved the
bili taxing shin-plasters ten per cent.
The bill takes effect on and after the
Oth of May proximo. Also, a bill
authorizing the Secretary of the
Treasury tu discharge direct tax col?
lectors at his discretion, imposing
their duties on the revenue collectors.
BALTIMORE, March 28.-The Re?
publican State Convention resolved
to take no part in the approaching
constitutional convention, but to urge
Congress to give the State a republi?
can Government.
AUGUSTA, GA., March 28.-Gen.
Sweeney has forbidden elections until
Pope assumes command.
MACON, GA., March 28.-A meeting
of freedmen Vas held last night, and
was addressed by several prominent
citizens.' The preamble and resolu?
tions thank Congress for emancipa?
tion and suffrage, aud disavow all
bitter feelings toward their late mas?
ters; promise faithful and respectful
discharge of their duties; endorse
the policy of Gov. Brown.

Boston, has arrived here. During
thc storm, she passed large quantities

NEW YORK, March 21).-The steamer
Seres, belonging to Woodruff & Beach,
and which was preparing for a South
American trip, was burnt in thc East
River to-day.
The ex-Confederate ship Alabama,
bought by the Greeks, and called by
them Akadion, has arrived at Syria.
ALBANY, N. Y., March 28.-The
Constitutional Convention bill having
passed, the Republican General Com?
mittee have issued a call fora Consti?
tutional Convention in Svracuse, on
the 10th of April.

WASHINGTON, March 2S.-lu the
Senate, the resolutions of the Repub?
lican Convention of Maryland, asking
for a republican government, was
referred to the Judiciary Committee.
The bill authorizing the Secretary of
War to employ two dredge boats to
keep open the mouth of the Missis?
sippi passed, and goes to the Presi?
dent. The bill confirming the South
Carolina tax sales to soldiers, sailors
and members of the marine corps,
passed. The adjournment question
was discussed. Incidentally, suffrage
was discussed, and the constitutional
amendment urged, proclaiming uni?
versal suffrage throughout the Union.
The proposition met little favor. It
was argued, that if let alone, the
States would soon adopt negro suf?
frage; whereas, if coercion at the
North was attempted, the people
would become stubborn. The ma?
jority of the Senate seemed unappre?
hensive of the President's failure to
exec it o the laws.

publican resolutions were presented.
Mr. Thomas said there was intense
excitement in Maryland, but doubted
its leading to bloodshed; he argued
the right of Congress to seize the
State, particularly as it lay around
the District, and should pass an ena?
bling act, thus guaranteeing equal
rights. Mr. Brooks argued elabo?
rately against the right of Congres?
sional interference, and asserted that
in Tennessee and Missouri there was
no more republicanism than in Egypt.
A committee of conference was called
on tlie adjournment question. A re?
solution authorizing the Secretary of
War to furnish transportation for
contributions from Baltimore to Wil?
mington, passed. The select com?
mittee ou Southern Railroads consists
of MeClung, Mercer, Washburne, of
Indiana, andClmndler. Joint resolu?
tion making eight hours a day's work
for Government laborers, passed.
