conciliate the Greeks. This is not
a new one. In 1859 it was in the
plan of the great conspiracy which
numbered sixty to eighty thousand
adherents. The spirit of the reform
de nanded by that party has survived
the suppression of the insurrection
referred to and now breaks out anew.
The brother of the Viceroy cf Egypt
has placed himself at the head of
the reform party, and the very heir
to the throne, Maurad Effendi, is
f.:voiable to tho views entertained
by the party. It is no wonder, then,
that the Porto yields to this pressure,
and the fear of trouble with its pow?
erful subject, the Viceroy of Egypt,
and thc concession to tho Greeks
will probably save the empire from
disruption ; but as will be seen by a
proclamation given in another co-1
lumn, tho Cretans have no conii- |
dence in this Government plan.

The suicido of two lovers at Santi
Spiritos, in Cuba, has caused a great
sensation there. A young man, says
a correspondent, rendered desperate
at being refused the hand of his
adored one on account of his poverty,
proposed to her tho fatal alternativo
from which Hamlet shrunk back
appalled. She consented, and lean?
ing lier head on the shoulder of her
lover, received from him that death
which was welcome in his company;
a second shot from his revolver, and
the pair were united in death, Horneo
and Juliet No. 2.
