the following reflections:
The persistencv with -which the
organs of Southern opinion dilute,
upon the glorious incidents of the
campaign, the intense interest with I
which the actors in those stirring
scenes are regarded, in spite of the
abounding miseries entailed by the
war upon the Southern people, give
evidence of a strength and continuity
in the national sentiment which
ought to extort the admiration rather
than the hatred of their conquerors,
and quicken the exercise of a mag?
nanimity which has not yet charac?
terized the acts of the American
Government or people.
The policy of the North, viewed in
either-.-a political or social aspect,
cannot fail, sooner or later, to rekin?
dle the elements of strife; and it is
hard to say what combinations the
South may not be enabled to form,
should Northern hatred again force
them to blows. Daily subjected to
humiliations more disastrous than
defeat, denied the aid which a mag?
nanimous conqueror never refuses to
a fallen enemy, stung to tho quick at
being placed on un equality with the
freedmen, erstwhile bound to them
as much by ties of affection and gra?
titud?1 as by the rights of proprietor?
ship, forced into the living death of
a political union which they hate,
and which now deprives them ->f all
participation in the government of
the common country, it may indeed
be regarded as inevitable that they
will seek again to throw oft* the in
intoleruble yoke, and trust to the
arbitrament of battle to relieve thom
from Northern domination. With
the Franco-Mexican imbroglio still un?
settled-the Monroe doctrine reite?
rated by the American press, Govern?
ment and people-Northern diplo?
macy conspicuous for an arrogant
dictation unknown in the modern
history of States, and a studied vio?
lation of the principles of that neu?
trality of which the American Go?
vernment constitutes itself the sole
judge and interpreter-the European
powers would view a renewal of the
rebellion with widely different sensa?
tions than were evoked by a%truggle
involving the extinction of an insti?
tution repugnant to civilization. If
the North were wise-if the Govern?
ment and people were possessed of
but an ordinary amount ot prudence
and foresight, they would cease all
attempts at repression, withdraw the
obnoxious constitutional amendment,
and, by a kind aud conciliatory
policy, bring back the loyal allegiance
of the States lately in arms against
her. By neglecting to do this, she
will render herself responsible for
fresh disasters; and iu the present
temper of both North and South and
the great European powers, there are
elements of embroilment which might
speedily burst into a flame, and en?
velop Anglo-Saxon civilization in,
perhaps, a common glory and a coin
wen ruin.

A TEXAS FACTOKV.-The Houston
Telegraph says:
"The Eureka Mills are now turn?
ing out some 250 yards of cloth
(denims, drills and plaids) daily, and
will, within ten days or two weeks,
have twenty looms running, which
will give a daily product of sonn; 500
or GOO yards. We learn that the
company have ordered twenty more
looms, and will look for them by the
1st of April, when they will order
still thirty more, which will be all
contemplated in the present arrange?
ment of the building, machinery, ?fcc.
With seventy looms, making 2,000
yards of cloth per day, the mills at
once take rank as muong the most
important in the State.
