The Natchitoclies Times, of the 6th, says: "We are informed by Mr. Arthur Chaler that the coolies working on his plantation are good laborers and sober men. They are industrious, and perfectly satisfied of their new country, and any amount of labor will be performed liv them, provided the contracts passed are carried out to the letter, and particularly that about the payment of monthly wages and rations." Gilbert Haven, in this week's In? dependent, has discovered a plan to settle at once all our political and soeiul differences. The substance of it all is that "the nation must cease to use the words 'freedman,' and 'co? lored,' and 'white,' and know only that of men and brethren.". Why cannot Congress declare by resolu? tion that there are no black men, and that the notion is au optical allusion? THE CONSTITUTION ARROGATED. When we remarked, yesterday, that j Congress had abrogated the Con? stitution of the United States we spoke advisedly. Wo did not mean merely that by treating the Southern States as conquered Terri? tories and establishing over each ef | them a military despotism the Consti? tution had, so far as they are concern? ed, been suspended or abolished. We desired to be understood as saying that Congress had annulled the Con? stitution, not only in one section, but in both-that that instrument is just as much a dead letter in Maine as in Louisiana. It is true that in thc Northern States its forms are still a hered to. The arbitrary and tyran? nical system which is to be set up in the South in lieu of the Constitution may not. as yet, extend its operations into the North. But the jicople of that section can have no reasonable assurance of escape. The Constitu? tional barriers behind which they would seek refuge are levelled, and thc minority is at the mercy of an angry and triumphant party. H? has read history to little profit who has not learned bow perilous is the position of those who hold life and liberty at the will of a freuzied fac t iou. The genius of the Constitution has ceased to irradiate the political firmament, and the darkness of des? potism, which is settling down upon us, will, in all human probability, en? shroud the whole American people. {Baltimore Gazette. THE JACK HAMILTONS.-There is a lot of loafers in Washington, without character enough to live at home, and too lazy to work abroad, who have constituted themselves into what is called "The Southern Republican Association," thc Chief of whom seems to be "Gen."
