WASHINGTON, February 2G.-In the
Senate, John D. Defrecs, of Indiana,
was elected Congressional printer.
Thc Educational Bureau bill, pro?
viding for a commissioner, nt a salary
of $4,000, and three clerks, nt the
respective salaries of*$2,000, $1,800
and $1,000, was favorably considered.
In connection therewith, Sumner said
ho was anxious that this generation
should be dignified as much as pos?
sible.
The Senate considered the army
appropriation bill, and passed it, with
a provision disbanding and disarm?
ing the militia in the unrepresented
States. Re-organization is forbid?
den, until Congressionally authorized.
It goes to the House for concurrence.

Two BARNUMS TN THE FIELD.-The
Democrats of the Fourth Congres- ?
sional District of Connecticut have
nominated Wm. H. Barnum, of Salis?
bury, as their candidate for Congress.
So there are now two Barnums in the
field-Barnum, o? Salisbury, and
Barnum, of Bridgeport; Barnum, the
iron man, and Barnum, the show?
man. The Democratic Barnum is a
man of large wealth and solid repu?
tation, identified with the business
interests of the district, and possess?
ing the respect and confidence of
the community.
The Order of tho Lion, of Baden,
richly set wiih diamonds, was recent?
ly sent to Count Bismarck, who re?
turned it, with the remark that the
stones were false. This led to an in?
vestigation, which is now going on,
from which it appears that this fraud
has been carried on for some time, so
that a number of decorated indivi?
duals have paste instead of diamonds.
Two gentlemen who had pawned
their Orders have now had them re?
turned to them by the pawn-brokers,
on account of thc imitation stones.
HOD. Andrew Hunter, of Arkansas,
who was elected to the United States
Senate last November, has just sent
to the Legislature a communication,
in which he states that, after mature
deliberation, he finds he cannot ac?
cept tho honor without injury to the
church of which he is a member, and
that there is no sacrifice he would
not be willing to make for the good
of the State which did not interfere
with his higher calling.
LOUISIANA.-The Concordia (La.)
intelligencer, of the 9th, says: "From
thc manner in which our plantprs are
working, they seem to have no fear of
a bad season. The negroes back in
the swamps, we learn, are putting
themselves to their tasks cheerfully,
and their employers have no cause of
complaint."
A GOOD IDEA.-George Peabody
proposes to appropriate the residue
of his property for a home for re?
jected office-holders. He hus given
$140,000 to the Essex Institue in
Salem. $100,000 for the endowment
of professorship, and $40,000 for
building.
It is said that Senator Doolittle, of
Wisconsin, will retain his seat, taking
the ground that to obey the voice of
the Legislature would set au unwise
precedent.
ONE GOOD RESULT.-The TICW bill
before Congress provides that the
militia shall consist of able-bodied
men in the States "represented in
Congress."
A first class English steamship will
leave New Orleans on the first of May
next, for Paris, and return, carrying
passengers the round trip for the
insignificant sum of $100.
The Tennessee Republican State
Convention have unanimously nomi?
nated Brownlow for re-election as
Governor.
