House, the Judiciary Committee im?
ported a bill providing that where
property was confiscated by the Con?
federate authorities, the former
owner may make proof before any
Federal court and commissioner;
the military commander of the dis?
trict wherein the confiscated land
lies, shall place the claimant in pos?
session, on presentation to the com?
missioner:; or judges of certified de?
cision, and protect the claimant in
possession. A bill was introduced to
confirm sales by tax commissioners
for South Carolina to persons iu the
army,' navy or marine corps.
The vote by which the Senate
passed Sherman's bill, as amended by
the House, was 211 to 7.

Missouri Legislature. It provides
for the registration of all houses of
prostitution or assignstion, and their
keepers and inmates, and a semi?
weekly medical examination of all

strictions are very stringent.
The Louisville Democrat suggests
that if anybody thinks this is not

had better come and try it. We see
and feel the Government everywhere,
and, as it is impossible to have too
; much of a good thing, we should
I rejoice at a fair prospect of getting
more of it.
There are now about 4,000,000
j acres of land enclosed in California,

occupied and improved land than

WrF. PROPOSE to publish a WEEKLY
PAPER, devoted to the diffusion of
the principles of r< ligion and thc interests
of the Baptist denomination. Wc have
been moved to this undertaking by tho
solicitations of brethren in various por?
tions of this State, as well as of other
States, among tho readers of the late
Confederate liaptist, and by our own con?
viction that a paper of a high character
would contribute largely to the intellectual
improvement, the religious progress and
the general welfare of the churches. The
field is large, affording ample room for all
sincere and Zealous laborers.
The Baptist will be printed ou a sheet
about twenty-two by thirty-two inches, and
will contain twenty-four broad columns,
mostly in Long Primer type, clear and
legible, so that it may be read with com?
fort, oven by tho aged. Its entire mecha?
nical execution will of the highest order.
Our columns will be enriched by corres?
pondence and contributions from the
other Southern States, and, occasionally,
from Europeandour missionary stations
abroad. The entertainment and instruc?
tion of tho young-especially thc child?
ren-will not be forgotten: and our venc
ble friend, "Uncle Fal ian," SO well and
favorably known to the readers of the
Confederate Baptist, will resume his labors
in then- behalf. In short, we possess all
thc facilities requisite to produce a paper
of the tirst rank. As such, we offer it to
our brethren, and solicit their generous
co-operation.

sufficient number of subscribers have been
secured.
