death of a negro under circumstances
of the most singular character. The
negro had been hunting wild hogs,
and shot one, but the wound not
proving mortal, a struggle took place.
The Cornet says: Thc negro and hog
were both fouud dead-the negro
with his under jaw firmly held within
the jaws of his formidable antagonist,
whose upper teeth had penetrated
within the negro's mouth, while its
under teeth held fast to tho chin of
the poor darkey, who in this strange
encounter proved both victim aud
victimizer.
Gen. E:irly, in thc preface to Iiis
memoir of tho war, says: "While
some Northern politicians and edit?
ors, who subsequently took rank
among thu most unscrupulous- and
vindictive of our enemies, and now ?
hold me to bo a traitor and rebel,
