Their purposes are widely different. . I understand that gentlemen now], here, who are known to have, the \ \ confidence of the great body of the ! Southern people, represent that this proposition of the Chief Justice would be cheerfully accepted in any ' form whieh Congress should prc- ' scribe ; or; rather (which embraced an additional concession) that the South j 1 would accept as the condition of i ' universal amnesty and unrestricted ! ' representation, impartial suffrage and ! 1 representation according to the ; 1 voting population. I mention these facts, not in the belief that any practical result is iu the slightest de? gree probable, but merely to show the people of the North thc true at? titude of the South, so that they limy contrast it with the revolutionary programme of the destructives. ANOTHER COTTON FIRE IS NEW YORK.-A disastrous fire occurred in the cotton warehouse No. 17, Albany street, on Saturday evening, the building being completely burned out. There were 1,500 bales of cot? ton stored in the place, whieh were totally consumed, causing a loss of about $50,000. MEXICAN EMIGRANTS.-The Hous? ton Telegraph says that with the de? parture of Maximilian and the suc? cess of the Liberals in Mexico, a largo immigration to Texas of the better and Wealthier classes of Mexi? cans may be, expected. The Holly Springs (Miss.) Reporter, of the 18th, complains that there Iras not be<m any rain in that neighbor? hood for six weeks, and that the roads are as dry and dusty as in mid? summer, while there is hardly any water left in the ponds and wells. The Maysville Eagle says that, the reports from the wheat crop in all sections of Northern KerUiclty are most encouraging. The usual breadth of land has not been sown, but nil | that has been planted is in a splendid j condition. Four hundred colored voters have ' been registered in Georgetown, 1>. C., ; nearly as many as then: are of white I voters. A negro has been nominated j foi Councilman in that city. We have been moved to this undertaking by the solicitations of brethren in various por? tions of this State, as well as of other States, among the readers of the late Confederate Baptist, and by our own con? viction that a paper of a high character would contribute largely to the intellectual improvement, the religious progress and the general welfare of the churches. The ?jeld is large, affording ample room for all sincere and zealous laborers. Tho Baptist will be printed on a sheet about twenty-two by thirty-two inches, and will contain twenty-four broad columns, mostly in Long Primer type, dear and legible, wo that it may bo road with com? fort, even by the aged. Its entire mecha? nical execution will bc ol* the highest order. Our columns will be enriched by corres . pondenco and contributions from the other Southern States, and, occasionally, ' from Eurone and our missionary stations i abroad.
