Tnu KANE MASONIC FLAG.-It will
bo remembered by many that Dr.
Kane took a Masonic flag with him
on his lust Arctic expedition, and
that one of his officers, Dr. Hayes,
while on an exploration, discovered
what was culled au Open Polar Sea;
and on a headland, within 500 miles
of the North Polo, that Masonic flag
and the American ling were planted
side by side. No other flag had ever
been displayed so fur North, and the
act was regarded ;is a great achieve?
ment. The flags were brought home
by the officers of the expedition, and
the Masonic flag was, early this year,
deposited with Kane Lodge, New

John H. Lester has instituted a
snit against Gen. Butler for damages, j
He alleges that the said Butler ar- j
rested him at Fortress Monroe, and
took $15,000 in money and other
property, and, through a court-mar?
tial, sentenced him tb ten years' im?
prisonment; he was sent to Hatteras
Island, and kept for many months,
until released by General Cirant. He
claims $100,000 damages, and $75,000
for property.
THE FUENCH DEBT.-Napoleon,
since his accession to the French
throne, has added $1,350,000,000 to
the debt of France, which now
amounts to $2,415,000,000-a sum
almost os great as the total debt of
the United States. Napoleon's wars j
have cost him about $500,000,000,
and since 1851 the annual deficit of
the French revenues has averaged ;
$50,000,000.
