A RADICAL WARNING.-The Nation, which is certainly the most thought? ful, as it is the most powerful, organ of its party, thus, in its retrospect of tho years 18G5 and 18G6, reflects upon pending issues and proposi? tions; Thc abolition of slavery only be? came au accomplishes fact in 1805. It was a great event; the greatest, perhaps-considering the number of persons, living and unborn, whose destiny has been aii'eeted by it which bas occurred since Christ came. It was so great an event that the first, impulse of most of those who assist? ed in bringing it about was to believe that emancipation was the one thing needful for thc slave, and that once free'he might safely be left to work out his own salvation, no matter what dangers, moral or material, beset bim. We have awakened from tbat delusion. Most people are now , satisiicd that freedom alone is a very imperfect boon, and that he has to be provided with the means of pre? serving and profiting by it. One party is satisfied thal all he needs, not only to accomplish this cud, but to become a strong power of J defence for our Govern tuen t, is the ballot. They talk of it aa if it were a talisman or an elixir of life, a great ; cnliglftener and educator, and the only one needed. It is safe to say that this theory, too, is undergoing reconsideration; that every month adds to the number ol' those who feel that the buhot in the bands of an ij norant man may prove but a club in the bands of a blind Sampson, which he may use against bis friends as well as foes, as Cien, lintier has happily termed it, and that to make it a real blessing it ought to bo accompanied by education. The disposition which has shown itself so widely amongst Northern politicians of late to treat education as of no political impor? tance, is, we feel sure, the offspring of passing party excitement, and will disappear under the influence of deeper reflection and wider experi? ence. COTTON.-The Mobile Daily Times says: "We sincerely believe that the reign of King Cotton is over; he never was much of a monarch, only so long as nobody cared to up- i set him; but to-day, unless there be competition in free labor, and the sub-division of large estates, to? gether with a repeal of the three per cent, tax, the lower ranges of cotton, which formed fully seven-eighths of the production, will not be able to find a market remunerative enough to justify its cultivation." PROTESTANT VS CATHOLIC.-The New York Tablet says: "Protestant theology is fast losing all hold on the popular mind in America, and is evaporating into dim conjectures, vibrating between its favorite ex? tremes of a total human depravity on the one hand, and a doctrine of total manhood infallibility on the other.
