A Grand Old Poem.
Who ?hall judge a mr.n from manners?
Who ?hall know him by his drew?
Paopers may bo fit for princes,
Princes fit for nothing lose.
Crumpled shirt and dirty jacket
May beclothe the golden ore
Of the dcopest thought and feeling -
Satin vests could do no more.
There arc spjinRs of crystal nectar .
Ever welling out of stone:
There aro purple buds and golden.
Hidden, crushed and overgrown.
God who counts by souls, not dresses,
Loves and prospers you and me,
AVhilc he values throues the highest
But as pebbles in thc sea.
Man; npraiscd above his fellow.-,
Oft forgets his fellows then:
Masters, rulers, lords, remember
That your meanest hinds are nv a:
Men by labor, men by feeling.
Mon by thought, and men by fame,
Claiming equal rights to sunshine.
In a man s ennobling name.
There are foam-embroidered oceans.
There are little wccd-clad rills;
There aro feeble, inch-high saplings,
There arc cedars on the hills.
God, who counts by souls, not stati
Loves lind prospers you and mc;
For to him all vain distinctions
Are as pebbles in the sea.
Toiling hands alone are builders
Of a nation's wealth or fame;
Titled laziness is pensioned,
Fed and fattened on the same;
By the sweat of other's foreheads,
Living only to rejoice;
While tho poor man's outraged freedom
Vainly lilted up his voice.
Truth and justice arc eternal,
Born with loveliness and light,
Secret wrongs shall never prosper
While there is a sunny right;
(?od, whoso world-heard voice is singing
Boundless love to you and me.
Sinks oppression with its tith s.
As the pebbles in 1 he sea.
A GOOP HOAX PLATED UPON A COU?
P?E op. NORTH CAROLINIANS BY A
NE GEO OF MEMPHIS.-Two of thc
most respectable citizens of Wilming
ton N. C., Avcrcterribly hoaxed about
n, week since, by a negro of Memphis.
He represented himself to the gen?
tlemen as having formerly lived near
Memphis, and that previous to tho
?war he had been tho confidential
slave of his master. He also stated
that when the Union army ad?
vanced on Memphis, his master, with
his assistance, had buried ? 45,OOO
in gold; that he escaped North, and
soon afterward Iiis master was killed,
and none kucw the place of the de?
posit of tho treasure but himself. He
applied in vain to several parties,
but at last succeeded in getting two
of Wilmington's most prominent citi?
zens to come with him to the city,
promising to remunerate them with
the treasure. They accordingly start?
ed for this point with the negro, who
eat and drank of the best; in fact,
lived like a lord by the way, and;
arriving here, went in the night with
the negro to dig for the treasure in
Elmwood Cemetery. While they
were digging, the negro made some
creuse to get away from them, and
then, making a sudden bolt, left them
with their spades and shovels to get
away the best way they could. The
operation cost the parties about $300.
HILLED BY AN JEKOLITE.-A Taris
correspondent writes:
About a month ago, a Scotch Po?
liceman mysteriously disappeared,
but has since been found drowned in
Dunsapple Loch, with no trace of
violence on him, beyond a slight dis?
coloration of the forehead. It is not
supposed that anybody would be
likely to murder him,"and there is no
probability that he committed sui?
cide. Mr. Munson writes to suggest
that as the poor man's disappearance
was on the night of the falling stars,
he Avas very probably struck by one
of them and knocked into the lake.
"It is but a few years since,"' Mr.
Munson continues, "that a brother
and sister were driving in an open
carriage in Tuscany, and the former
of the two was suddenly half
stunned by a blow on the hoad
from a small ?orolite, which was
picked up immediately after the
accident. Tho occurrence was noto?
rious at the time, and the injured in?
dividual trustworthy and well-known.
A second instance ol' the fall of un
torolite occurred lately in the gardens
of an intimate friend of my own, at
Florence, on which occasion some of
the inmates lind a narrow escape from
being struck. The missile was exa?
mined by ns, and its sp?cifie gravity
exceeded that of a bullet."
?Some people are as careful of their
troubles as mothers are of their babes;
they cuddle them, and rock them,
and hug them, and cry over them,
and fly into a passion with you if you
try to take them away from them;
they want you to fret with them, and
to help them to believe they have
been worse treated than anybody else.
If they could, they would have a
picture of their grief in a gold frame
hung over the mantle shelf for every?
body to look ar. And their grief
makes them ordinarily selfish-they
think more of their dear little grief
in the basket and in tho cradle than j
they do of all the world besides; and
they say you are hard-hearted if you !
say "don't fret." "Ah! you don't
understand me -you don't know me
-you can't enter into my trials."
Alexander Dumas, jr., was recently
asked, "How happens it you no
longer go into company?" "Jlecause
I saw company made me more stupid,
and I did not mako company more
sprightly."
Why is Turkey called the Sublime
Porte? Because it is only one step
thence to tho ridiculous. No matter
-any port in a storm.
