"THE BLESSINGS OF FREEDOM."
Thc following somewhat over-drawn
picture is copied from thc New Huven
(Conn.) Register-we say over-drawn,
because while Northern men, who
undertake to run cotton plantations,
may fail in inducing thc freedmen to
remain in their employ, a good many
Southern planters are moro success?
ful with the late chattels. But here is.
what the Connecticut paper says:
A friend, (and a decided Eepub
lican,) who fought through tho war,
and is now trying to run a plantation,
"down in Dixie/' complains of "the
Hncertainty of procuring labor"
that ho had hired seven different
gangs since lie took thc plantation,
"and could not induce any of them
to remain long;*' that, the last ones,
ho "agreed to pay iu advance, week
to week, as long as theyr would re?
main-which was exactly six days,
and thc last he saw of thom, they
were marching (Indian Hie) down the
road, singing, 'We'll hang Jeff. Davis
on a sour apple tree,' " in thc full
enjoyment of "life, liberty and tho
pursuit of happiness." "Wo imagine
thc feelings of our Republican friend,
as he leaned over the palings, and saw
his sable friends "on their winding
way," to have bceu akin to those of
Pharaoh, when the children of Israel
"took to tho water,"' and we .don't
recollect, at this moment, any one
whose faith in "negro equality" de?
served a more convincing shock than
his. He is now looking for Northern
white laborers, satisfied that the
"freedmen" will not bo ready to go
to work during thc present century.
An ingenious artificer at Geneva,
in thc mountains of Switzerland, has
recently written his name high on
the roll of great mechauics. He did
so "by constructing a jewel called the
"Magic Bird." lt is not larger than
a common tobacco box. By touch?
ing a spring the golden lid flies open,
a tiny little bird darts forth, sings a
beautiful song, and flies back again
into its goldeu nest. This wonder?
ful jewel, which a man can carry in
his vest pocket, costs tho neat little
sum of $1,000. Only two of them
have ever been made.
THE OHIO PENITENTT AKY. -A de?
spatch from Columbus, sa3-s: Eigh?
teen convicts arrived to-day at the
Ohio Penitentiary-nine from Hamil- j
ton County, eight from Lucas, and
one from Champaign. Eleven of the
number were convicted of grand
larceny. The aggregate period for
which thc eighteen are sentenced, is
sixty-five years. This arrival makes
the number of prisoners now in tho
Ohio Penitentiary 029.
SMALL.-The Baltimore Transcript
declares that about the smallest piece
of legislation that has come under its
notice lately, is thc striking out the
compensation fur a pardon clerk to
thc President. This was done on
motion of Mr. Grinell, of Iowa. The
Transcript should bear in mind that
Grinell is an exceedingly small man.
and that nothing larger was to have
been expected of him.
