E. C. Schauton, of this city, President of
the New York and New Haven Railroad,
was run over and instantly killed by a train
from this city, at South Norwalk, this
morning.
NEW ORLEANS, December 20.-Judge
Kennedy, of the Galveston and Houston
District" of Texas, decided that the lately
enacted stay law is unconstitutional. This
law is similar to the one vetoed by Gov?
ernor Humphrey, of Mississippi, and pro?
vides for thc payment of debts by four
annual instalments.
ST. LOUIS. December 28.-Tho wagon
factory of Hebron & Richaer, and the
dwelling adjoining, at St. Joseph, was
burned, last night. Loss $12,0(10 to $15,000;
insured for $4,000.
NEW YORK, December 28.-The fire at
Elmira on Sunday was quite disastrous. It
caught in a drug store on Lake street, j
Soon after vho discovery, some chemicals
exploded, tearing tho building and the j
adjoining houses, and carrying the flames 1
to thc buildings on the opposite side of tho
street, setting fire to An tao n's Hotel and
Turner Hall. Thc fire raged over six
