For information concerning results
produced by a system of freo labor,
as compared with results produced
by a system of slave labor, on the
same plantation, our readers will
please read thc following extract from
a letter received by us, last night, and
dated Gourdin's Station, 19th Decem?
ber, 18G6:
"I am here ou business, and the
plantation which I am upon, used,
under slave laboi-, to produce about
125 bags cotton, a sufficiency of corn
to feed 230 negroes, and leave au an?
nual surplus of 2,000 or 3,0'. 10 bushels.
Its growth for the year 18GG has been
(judging from the owner's share, as
brought in and divided) about 100
bushels of corn, harvested, and be?
tween twelve and thirteen cwt. or
seed cotton, gathered. Freed labor,
here, has not been productive labor."
With such results as are shown in
the above extract, we may well ask
