Tho cotton crop of Illinois this
year pays well, but is not as remune?
rativo as in former years. A corres?
pondent near Cairo says:
"The . crop during th a past few
years has been an exceedingly profit?
able one. The present year, the sea?
son is said to have been unfavorable,
and prices have depreciated. Wo j
lind it selling hero at six and three
quarters and seven cents per pound
in tho seed. About four pounds of1
seed cotton make ono of ginned cot?
ton. Eyeu at this price, with favor?
able seiisons and careful culture, it isJ
a profitable crop. Last year,, the
crop was sold on an average at about
ten cents per pound iu tho seed.
About^ three thousand bales were
shipped from stations iu this County
last year, a portion of which was
grown in Johnson County."
The Portsmouth cotton factory is
importing operatives from Europe.

Nero McDaniel is about twenty-two
years (dd, live feet nine inclu?s high. Gregg
.Taylor is about twenty or twenty-two years
old, five feet seven inches high;" both dark
color. They were raised by Mr. John D.
Frost, sr., of this District, ten miles above
Columbia, on broad River. It is believed
that they aro still about the city or tho
plantation of Mr. Frost.

apples, pears and plums, and there are a
number of flourishing arbors of grapes,
including tho isabella, Catawba, Elands,
Madeira and Scuppemong, on thc place:
also, a line stock of strawberries, raspber?
ries and other small fruits.
The ornamental grounds about tho house
are extensive and beautifully laid out, and
ar#profusely supplied with rare and beau?
tiful evergreens, hedges, roses and shrub?
bery and other choice plants.
Altogether, the place presents very supe?
rior advantages for a pleasant, healthful
and convenient residence, and such an ono
as is seldom offered ;n thc market.
