Correspondence.
We have been requested to publish
the following correspondence, which
will explain itself. Wo commend
it to the attention of our readers:

DEAR Sin: Your name has been
frequently mentioned, in connection
with the names of several other
?worthy geutlemen, for the United
States Senatorship in the ensuing
vacancy, and I should be glad to be
informed of your determination in
t ic matter. Esteeming you highly as
T do, and appreciating the extensive
i ifluence which your very great I
ability, enlightened and progressive j
views will enable you to exercise for
the good of our proud but severely
troubled oki State, I should not feel
at liberty to cast my suffrage for any
one in*preference to yourself, ajad in
t ii"?. I think, I but utter the senti?
ment of the entire Delegation of
Charleston.
Pardon me, therefore, the inquiry at
kthis early season, ami permit me to

MY DEAR SIR : I have already ac?
knowledged receipt of your very kind
letter of the 12th September, and
now hand yon my answer.
If yon have reason to believe that
those who supported me last year
generally desire it, you are at liberty
to say that I will be a candidate for
the United States Senatorship.
I have just returned from "Wash?
ington. Each visit there strength?
ens my conviction of the importance
it is to our people to have a represen?
tative in frequent, if not constant at?
tendance at that place. We have
material, as well as political, interests
upon wrhich our welfare rests. To
both, tho presence of a representative
is important. As a merely private
citizen, I have been able to render
very essential services. They were
the voluntary and gratuitous services
of one without public position; but
they have not been without ample
compensation in the .good they have
done, and the pleasure they have
given me.
I think it a prevalent mistake to
suppose that public and political, as
web as personal, services may not be
rendered hy our Representatives,
even though unpaid, and excluded
from Congress. Such opportunities
and responsibilities are not likely tu
be diminished at present.
The elections, by reason of bad
faith and selfishness of the old Demo?
cratic organization, will result, I
think, adversely to our hopes. It is,
I think, to be regretted that we
should have identified ourselves so
far as we have with that party.
I desire that my claims to the con?
fidence of the public may bo urged
onhf upon the ground that I am ca?
pable and willing to serve South Car?
olina in tlie day of her -adversity,
while she has no recognized honors
to bestow, save her confidence.
I should gratefully receive and
acknowledge that confidence which
would call upon me to labor in her
name and in her cause, until sk;
may be restored, without shame or
stain, to her ancient place, where and
when she may again begin to award
among her war-worn sons the honors
that aro theirs. When that day shall
come, I shall then neither seek or hold
such honors, or any more be heard
of in rivalry to serve her. With
just such purposes, stimulated hy
illusory assurances, which should
have been truthful and sacred, I
have once before been a candidate.
These purposes are unchanged. I
did not then complain of the adverse
judgment passed upon me, nor ab?
stain from her service because the
State had declined to credit me.
I do not expect to bear with less
fortitude or cheerfulness the future
than I have borne the past. I am,
very truly, vcur friend and obedient
