How A YOUNG WOMAN STOLE PANTALOONS.-A young lady by tin name of Herbert was caught the other evening in the act of stealing pants in a ready-made clothing store m Mon? treal. H r modus operandi was, after carrying the unmentionables (which she made up at home for the firm) into the back store, she would draw on two or three pairs, and by fcurningup the legs so that they could not be seen below herdress/she would pass out unnoticed. PKETTY GOOD.-A despatch to the New York Post says that Confeder? ate General Edward Johnson having been recently pardoned, on Tuesday, called upon the United States Trea? surer at Washington for the payment of a check for three or four hundred dollars due to him on settlement as a Major in the United States army in 3861, just before he joined the sirmy of the Confedracy. The Trea? surer refused the payment. Two young fellows got to bantering each other, the other day. . Finally one of them exclaimed, "Well, there is one thing, ydto can't put your head into an empty barrel." "Oh, non? sense," exclaimed the other, "why can't I?" "Because," dryly rejoined the first, "it is impossible to put a hogshead into a barrel." A man named Oats was bad up recently for beating his wife and child? ren. On being sentenced to impri? sonment, the brute remarked that it was very hard that a man was not al? lowed to thrash his own oats. CERTAIN ladies of Columbia have asso? ciated themselves together for the purpose of raising funds to clotho and educate a limited number of orphan chil? dren. To carry this design into execution, they propose to hold a C1IA1UTY FAIR in Columbia, commencing on TUESDAY EVENING, December 4, and continuing during the week, at Janncy's Hall. An attractive feature of tho Fair will consist of aseries of Tableaux, represent? ing various scenes at homo and abroad.
