COLUMBIA. Wednesday Morning, Oct. 31, 186b". Homes for <lie People. This subject, ?it the present time, is ittractiug much attention, both in Europe and this country. Louis Na? poleon has made it one of his princi? pal designs for the Taris exhibition. In "New York, St. John's Park has been purchased for this purpose. !o many Southern cities, tho. ?ame aabj??t is attracting much attention ?it this time; and especially now, when the South has been made deso? lat?'by the calamities of war, it is a subject which deserves and must at? tract the attention and interest of capitalists and the philanthropic. In no city in the South is such a scheme more desirable than in Columbia, at the present time. How this is to be accomplished, j und in what mode or manner, is to be left to those who feel an interest in the matter. One thing is certain, that no better opportunity, or ono that deserves more prompt action, than exists at this period, will ever present itself. There are lots, in and around Columbia, which could be purchased comparatively cheap, and which, by concentration of energy and capital, used in a proper direr- j lion, could affect the desired object, j Such homes would not only accom- j modate our present citizens, but would induce an immigration of la? bor, which, at present, is one of the great means in carrying out the work of recuperation. How this desirable end is to be attained, must be left to those who feel an interest in the wel? fare of our city. PRACTICING THEIR VANDALISM AT HOME.-The New Albany (Indiaua) Ledger says: "About the most dartardly out? rage we have lately heard of trans? pired near this city on Thursday night. On that night, some ruffians of the baser sort broke into school hons.! No. 5, about one mile out from the city, and robbed the teacher's desk ol' a gold pen, broke the window shutters, strewed the children's books over the floor, and committed other vandalistic acts. They left writing of a vulgar character in several places in the house. It is believed they re? side in New Albany." The acts complained of were com? mitted by the same men who, during the war, desecrated and defiled the Southern churches, school-houses, court houses and private residences. We cannot regret that they are giving their own people a taste of their quality. - A CONVINCING ARGUMENT.-"It seems doubtful," says awriter for the New York Ti ines, "if even grout popular majorities can awaken these misguided men [rebels] to the danger of their situation." A people that refuses to be convinced by such argu? ments as 1'great popular majorities" must be misguided and stupified in? deed. The Democrats, however, were not convinced by such in 1840. nor the Whigs in 1844, nor the Republi? cans in 1848. .ANOTHER PROPOSITION.-A radical writer for tho Anti-Slavery Standard thinks that we shall adopt the consti? tutional amendment excluding all of our old leaders from oftiee, and that, as they will then be anxious to have their disability removed, they will consent to enfranchise the negroes on condition that Congress will so re? lieve them. He is in favor of the compromise. --. +- ? The New York Herald of Friday says: "ft is reported in our Charles? ton correspondence, that the promi? nent leaders of South Carolina are aiding (?overner Orr to carry the constitutional amendment through the Legislature, as a measure of relief to President Johnson." FORNEY'S MOTIVES LAID BARE. lt is pleasant to see, us we do, that some of Forney's brother radicals do not hesitate to tell him just what "manner of man" he is. Those journalists among us who affect to deprecate any preparation by our Government to meet the emergency are either ignorant of the rapid ?nardi ?of events, -jr they arti too near-sighted to soe that our Cfovorn meilt must have a policy, and a very decided policy, marked out in regard to Mexico, or be content to witness one or more of the powers of Western Europe again intervening in some j new form.
