Five twenti?So8j. LONDON, October 17. - Sunday's advices from Japan are conflicting. The latest re? port says tho Tycoon's army had sum-red a heavy defeat at the bands of the insur gonts, and that the Tycoon had abdicated, in consequence. His stated that the British Government ia about to ask of Parliament an increase of ?1,000,000 sterling in excess of the amount voted for tho army, and a large additional amount to that appropriated in former years for the navy. News Horns. NEW YORK, October 28.-Tho Secretary of State has addressed a letter to Sir Fre deriekvBruee, in behalf of James Lynch and John McMahon, recently convicted in a Colonial Court, in Canada, and sentenced to death, upon a charge that, being citi? zens of tho United States, they were actors in the assault made in the month of June last, at Fort Erio, in that colony. Tho Secretary says that the United States Consul at Toronto has been instructed to procure for the information of the Govern? ment a copy of the record of the trial and conviction of Lynch and McMahon, and also of all further trials and convictions of a similar character which shall take place in Canada. The Secretary says: ThePre sidont directs me to assure yon of his con? fident hope that her Majesty's Government will not only cheerfully comply with tho re? quest tims made, but ?hat they will think it proper, also, to examino the judicial pro? ceedings aforesaid with a careful regard to the rights of tho United States and to the maintenance of good relations between thu two countries. For this reason, it will bo very gratifying to tho President if you should be able to give mc an assurance that the execution of tho sentences pro? nounced upon convicted persons will bo suspended, if occasion for delay should arise in the manner before mentioned, to make it desirable. It is the opinion of this Government that sound policy coincides with the best impulses of a benevolent na? ture in recommending tenderness, amnesty and forgiveness in such cases. The Herald's Toronto special says that despatches are coming from all parts of the provinces, demanding that no mercy bo shown the convicted Fenians, lt is doubt? ful if the Crown can find evidence strong enough to convict Rev. Mr. Lumsden. Tho threats made by tho New York Fe? nians to avenge the death of thoso con? victed are doing great injury to the pri? soners. Petitions are to bc circulated and sent to the Governor-General to forward to the Home Government, to have the sen? tences commuted to imprisonment. David Whaler, Patrick Norton and Daniel Drum? mond have been arraigned. Tears are ex? pressed that the prisoners may escapo, as there are in the city over 500 unemployed Irish Americans. The Fenian prisoners at Cornwall are to ho indicted, on Monday, for high treason, and tried on tho following Wednesday. NEW .OBK, October 29.-The Democratic and National Union Committee has passed resolutions requesting the Government to take speedy interference for the safety and protection of Lynch and McMahon. Irn meuso meetings have been held at Buffalo in sympathy for the prisoners. ST. LOTUS, October 29.-A Fenian meet? ing bas been called to consider what action is necessary to bo taken in thc- case of Col. Lynch and Father McMahon. WASHINGTON, October 29.-Miss Fannie Seward^ daughter of tho Secretary of State, died this morning. The sub-committeo appointed by tho Tammany Hall General Committee to call on tho President, with a view of obtaining Executive interference in tho case of tin American citizens condemned to death at Toronto, had an interview this morning. In response to an address of their chair? man, the President remarked that he had anticipated their resolutions and memorial, as would bc perceived by a copy of tho cor? respondence in relation to the subject, published this morning.
