Tho Baltimore Sun, of Monday, gives tho following description of tho magnifia cent procession ami imposing ceremonies at the closing session of tho Catholic Council: The fifth and closing public session of tho Catholic hierarchy of thc United States, for the past two weeks sitting in this city, was held yesterday, at the Ca? thedral, attended with imposing ceremo? nies. The procession of prelates and clergy on the opening Sunday, tho 7th instant, though grand and solemn, was eclipsed by the magnificent display of yesterday, the numbers of prelates and clergy in tho lino bein J much larger, the rich and costly vestments, studded with jewels, worn by many of the bishops and heads of orders, adding to tho brilliant effect. About 0 o'clock, the several Catholic BC cictios of tho city, with tho Young Catho? lics' Friend Society, of Washington, num? bering, in all, somo 2.000 persons, took up position on either curb at Charles, Mul? berry and Cathedral streets, from tho archiepiscopal mansion to tho Wost en? trance of the Cathedral, keeping tho car? riage-way clear for the procession. The chanters, numbering twenty one, in white surplices and black cassocks, came fiext. and led tho hymns Teni ('ventor Spiritus and Ave Maris Stella, which were taken up by tho entire body. Then came tho notaries and secre? taries of thc Council, the rectors of theo? logical Seminaries, thc superior of reli? gious orders and communities, tlie vicars general and the administrators of vacant sees, numbering about forty, in beautiful vestments, spangled with gold and silver, bearing the image of a cross or other em? blems of the Catholic faith. Three, mitred abbots, bearing croziers, | were succeeded by thirty-seven bisho[ f>, in vestments and copes of thc most gorgeous character, and wearing thc mitre, many of which were adorned with diamonds, eme? ralds or other precious stones. Then suc? ceeded the six Archbishops of the pro? vinces of New York, New Orleans, San Francisco. Cincinnati, St. Louis and Ore? gon Ciiy, each attended by a sanctuary boy as crozier-bearer and train-bearer. Closing the procession, emile a sub-dea? con, bearing a magnificent golden cross, j beautifully emblazoned, followed hy thc Apostolic Delegate and suite, consisting of the sub-deacon, two deacons of honor, and the vicar-general of tho arch-diocese ol Ballimore. On entering the sacred edifice, which was densely filled, very many present being of other denominations, as on tho opening Sunday, the choir and orchestra, number? ing, in aU, over 100 performers, performed a splendid march, which was continued until the prelates, vicars-general and heads of orders had taken their sc:Ts within the sanctuary rail, the centre aisle ami space in front of thc sanctuary hoing reserved for the theologians and priests, whilst tho side aisles were occupied by the minor ec? clesiastics After the Apostolic Delegate, Archbishop Spalding, had taken the place of prece? dence, on a raised seat, under a crimson canopy, on tho gospel sido of the altar, the celebrant of mass, the Most Kev. J. M. Odin, of New Orleans, was robed at tho foot of the altar, being attended by Rev. Father Gaudet, as assistant priest, and tho' Rev. Fathers Gibbons and Lequerrier, as deacon and sub-deacon. Mass was then sung by tho celebrant, the j choir and orchestra rendering Hummers j celebrated Mass No. 2 in magnificent style, I tho rich volumes of tho chorus adding j greatly to the solemnity of the occasion. At tho offertory, the Alma Virgo, soprano solo and chorus, was sung in a style per? haps rarely equalled. MB. Gilmore Simms, LL.D., will soon be published: WAU POETRY OF TUK SOUTH. - We have taken especial pains to collect and publish in thc Examiner all of this poetry we could lind; for in it is embodied the principles, sentiments and hopes of our people at that epoch of their history which will always bc most fruitful in ennobling recol? lections. The struggle was calculated to evoke the slumbering fires of poetry, and verses were written nuder its influence, which, wo trust, will be handed down to our children. In the effort to rosalie this poetry from oblivion, so far as we could, the thought occurred to us how much bet? ter it would In-if some ono would gather up these fugitive pieces and embody them in book form. To this noble object we aro really glad to learn Mr. W. Gilmore Simms, of South Carolina, has already devoted I himself. Messrs. Richardson A Co., of New York, announce that this volume will shortly be published. Mr. Simms, tho author of this work, is already well-known as the author of tho "Partisan," "Mellichampe," and other novels of interest and power. Wo are glad this office has fallen into hands so well calculated to do it justice, and we antici? pate no little pleasure in ids collections.
