A WONDEREUL PAILROAI) INVEN? TION.-The London Harald says: It is a curious fact that for tho last four years an invention which may provo one of the most useful as 'well as the most wonderful <>f this won? der-working ago has been on view within an hour's drive of Paris. The general publie are at this moment unaware that at Da Jouchere, close to tho pretty village of Bouginal, j they have an opportunity ot witness- i ing every Sunday the extraordinary sight of a railway train ascending ti j steep gradient without tho aid of i steam and tire carriages of which are destitute ol' wheels. This invention is due to a French j engineer, M. D. J). Girard. It is found on a new application of an old principle, viz: That a layer of waiter introduced between two metal sur? faces enables them to glide on erich other with as little friction as a slab of ice on the polished surface of a frozen lake. M. Girard has con? ceived the idea of applying this prin? ciple to locomotion, and the experi? ment he has been carrying on for the last four years successfully demon? strates that it is applicable to tho propelling of railway trains. In his system, wheels arc dispensed with, and there can be no doubt that were his invention applied to ordinary rail? ways, un eugine which is now only able to draw a train weighing, say, 500 tons, at the rate of twenty miles an hour, would, with the same ex? penditure of fuel, be able to draw double the weight at double thc speed. M. Girard, however, pro? poses to discard stearn as a motive power. This is the weak part of his invention-the value of which con? sists in the substitution of sledge car? riages on wheels. These carriages are fitted on slides, which ht upon rails of a peculiar construction; by simply turning a cock, a stream of water is introduced between the slide and the rail, and a gentle motive power being applied, the carriage, mounted on the slide, shoots forward with a speed which really has no limit, beyond the consideration of safety. MEAN CUSSES.-In noticing the re? cent race meeting at Jerome Park, the New York correspondent of the Mobile Advertiser writes: It has been noticed that a great many of those who go to seethe races don't pay for the privilege of looking on; though nine-tenths of them are abundantly able to pay. Hundreds who drive out in barouches and phae? tons remain in their vehicles and enjoy the sport by looking at it over or through tho picket fence, instead j of paying a dollar each to view it from tho stand inside. This is taking a rather mean advantage of Mr. Je? rome's generosity. The men who strain their necks to catch a glimpse of the track and the horses wouldn't think much of a dollar if they hap? pened to be in a bar-room, but they clutch it very tightly at Jerome Park. It is very small kind of meanness, and perhaps they will be shamed out of it some time. A bold burglary was perpetrated in Cleveland, Ohio, a few nights ago. The thieves entered a private house, rummaged it from ono end to tin? other, and succeeded in securing plunder to the amount of Si,000. They then proceeded to the dining room and regaled themselves with liquors, put a chair upon the table, with a tumbler upon that, and, plac? ing the following note in the tumbler, decamped: "Sir: Jack Hivers and Jim McNary, a couple of novices, present you their compliments, and | return you their thanks for remain ' ing quiet while they were transacting I their business."
