All thou iiast taken from us, Only our God can know. KINDNESS-BENEFICENCE.-The technical definition of these words is one thing, nuil their practical appli? cation in human affairs is another. The world is full of kindness, hut there" is comparatively very little of it utilitizetl and made available for man? kind. Kindness, in tho dictionary, is one matter, but kindness in the family, the community, the State, or tho nation, is another, and in many respects altogether a different thing. The world is full of kindness that has never been spoken, and that is very little better than none at all. It is oven doubtful whether such kindness benefits its possessor. Like every other good, to be beneficial this prin- j ciple must be active. Passive kind? ness would soon make this world a blank. There is nothing God-like in it. Love, active, out-spoken, is what makes parents and children, brothers and sisters happy. Put if love is kept a secret it might us well not ex? ist, no ono is made better by it. A homo without active love, kindness, beneficence, and such kindred prin? ciples, is cheerless and cold, and the lazy dog or cat enjoying lifo under the stovc,[or ut the door-step, is hap? pier than the inmates of such a home. There aro great piles of trees fallen in inaccessible positions nil over the world that can never be. made avail? able for human wants. There are great masses of coal in thc bowels of thc earth, from which no man has ever yet realized any benefit. It is only the hewn and marketable timber and the mined coal brought to human habitations that give warmth and comfort to a home. It is even so with kindness. That quality, frozen away in a corner of the human heart, or buried too deep in the depths of the soul to be brought to the surface, can never give joy or sunshine to any despondent heart or gloomy i home. Active kindness, outgushing love, such as God manifested toward j the world, can alone benefit our race, ! and thc moral of all this is that the ? poor is ever with us, and winter is at our doors. l?AILiItOAD KSGINEEKS.-Brick Po meroy, of thc LaCrosse Democrat, pays a just tribute to that practical and devoted class of men, railroad engineers: God bless ami preserve the engi? neer! On all thc pages of history thero are no braver records than those made by railroad engineers. Wc once heard' thc whistle of au eu gineer at Des Jardin's Bridge, when, j with hand on the screaming whistle, ho sounded tho. alarm, and whistled himself down sixty feet into the murky waters and into heaven; never deserting his post in the plunge which was fatal to sixty-three out of eighty- j one souls. He was found at the j bottom of the river, his hand firmly holding the lever-his compressed ; lips telling the noble story of his death! We have heard him time and again; we have stood by him on tho engine in the hour of sudden danger and seen how a brave man would act when death reached ont his bony hand as we whirled past the door of eternity, so widely opened that we could almost hear tho voices of those within. We havo seen engineers in danger scores of times, but we never yet saw ono desert his post. To the noblo ones who have died in their duty'and their glory-to each of these we sound our whistle three times, for "All hail, thou noble men!"
